Janie Brannon, 66, of Shady Point died Monday, Sept. 16, 2013, at her home in Shady Point. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept 20, in the Old Talihina Cemetery under the direction of Talihina Funeral Home.
Waylan G. Gentry, 77, of Spiro died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013. Graveside services are planned for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, in Spiro City Cemetery under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home.
This year marks the 25th year for the Talihina Fall Foliage Festival.
The Oct. 26 event promises something for all interests â€” arts and crafts vendors, food, a 1967-1969 Camaro parade through Talihina that will end at the car show in the Talihina School new gym parking lot, 5k run, childrenâ€™s activities including the inflatables sponsored by Pine Cellular, the Choctaw Indian Cultural and Heritage Area and Legends of the Mountains story telling.
Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center will hold four community meetings in October through December to assess health care needs in the area, EOMC officials announced.
The assessment is required every three years under new health care legislation, according to an EOMC press release.
Community input is needed to ensure the success of the project, which will run from October into December, the release said.
The meetings will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.Â on the dates listed below. The first meeting will provide a more in-depth overview of what will occur during the process.
WISTER â€” Rattan pitcher Jordan Jones proved to be too much to handle for the Wister Wildcats on Saturday afternoon as he struck out nine batters in a complete-game 5-0 victory.
CAMERON â€” The Cameron Yellowjackets baseball team split its games in its home three-way on Friday, shutting out the Preston Pirates 7-0 but losing to the Rattan Rams 4-2.
PRAGUE â€” Two Heavener High School cross country runners medaled at the Prague Invitational on Saturday.
In the boys division, Arturo Ortega was 11th with a time of 19:35. It marked the second straight meet to medal as he also did so in the Henryetta Invitational on Sept. 7 as he was 26th (20:16).
Barbara Johnson medaled in the girls race, finshing 13th (15:05).

It's finally here â€” the 2013 LeFlore County Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament, which is taking place this year in Panama.
For the first time in four years (three of those since I've been here), the field for the title would appear to be wide open.
Poteau is the favorite, but may not have the cakewalk it has had in dominating the field for the last four years â€” and yes, that's a credit to the six seniors who graduated last spring, who never lost a fast-pitch county tournament game in their four years.
KIOWA â€” The Talihina Lady Golden Tigers softball team finished in third place at the Kiowa Tournament on Saturday.
The Lady Golden Tigers beat Wilburton 6-3 and Hartshorne â€” which opened the tournament by beating Talihina 5-4 Thursday afternoon â€” by a score of 8-1.
However, the Lady Golden Tigers fell to the Buffalo Valley Lady Buffaloes 5-0 in the loser's-bracket final to end up third.
