The 2013 baseball season will begin at 12:30 this afternoon for the Carl Albert State College Vikings with a doubleheader against the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Ark.
âWe like our team,â said Mark Pollard, who is entering his 31st year as coach of the Vikings and who got his 900th coaching victory last season. âThis club wonât be intimidated because we have enough veterans, and better talent level, to compete. Weâre excited. This club has a chance. The potential is there. We won 37 games last year. This club has a chance for more wins, and pitch better, than that club did.â
QUINTON â The Leflore Savages basketball team will enter the Class B playoffs on a two-game winning streak.
Leflore defeated Quinton 49-33 Monday night in a battle of Savages to end the regular season.
RED OAK â It was a rough night for Howe High School basketball teams Monday night at C.C. Gillespie Fieldhouse as they both suffered losses to host Red Oak.
The Eagles soared over the Lions 58-35, while the Lady Eagles used a strong second half to fly past the Lady Lions 57-38.
There is a saying that the only time that a team needs to be ahead is when all the time has expired off the clock. That is just what the Roland Lady Rangers did against the Poteau Lady Pirates on Friday night at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse.
After trailing for all but two seconds of the game, Roland's Sydney Walters hit one of two free throws to give the Lady Rangers their only lead to escape with a 46-45 win to make their winning streak reach 16 games.
The top-ranked Rangers had little problems with the Pirates, winning 74-47.
PANAMA â The Panama Lady Razorbacks avenged an earlier loss to the Bokoshe Lady Tigers on Friday night, but it didn't come easy. Thanks to a second-half spurt, the Lady âBacks downed the Lady Tigers 46-38.
Trailing 23-22 in the third quarter, the Lady Razorbacks ended the game with a 23-16 run to get the comeback victory.
Howe 68, Wister 45: In Howe, the Lady Lions roared out to a 19-8 lead after a period to take control of the game.
Talihina 46, Pocola 38: In Talihina, the Lady Golden Tigers jumped to a 21-6 lead after a period, thanks to a 9-for-14 shooting performance from the field.
HOWE â It took four extra minutes, but the Wister Wildcats were able to outlast the Howe Lions 51-50 Friday night.
Trailing 31-29 after three periods, the Wildcats outscored the Lions 16-14 in the final quarter to tie the game at 45-all at the end of regulation. In overtime, the âCats outscored the Lions 6-5 to get the win.
Leflore 61, Whitesboro 58, 2 OT: In Leflore, Travis White's 3-point basket with a second left in double overtime lifted the Savages, who had not played since the LeFlore County Tournament.
It's hard to believe that the regular season is about over. The Class A and B playoffs will begin at the end of this week with district tournaments. The schedule will be part of the entire weeklong schedule at the end of this column.
At the end of next week will be the Class 2A, 3A and 4A district tournaments.
