Pocola basketball teams each have new coaches; Nelke leaves Poteau for alma mater's Indians, while Ladd jumps to Lady Indians

There will be some changes on the basketball sidelines when the 2014-15 seasons get going in late November/December for Pocola High School.
For starters, Poteau boys coach and former Indian player Scott Nelke will coach the Indians, who had been coached by Eric Ladd.
However Pocola fans, have no fear. Ladd will still be around as he will now coach the Lady Indians after three-year coach Carrie Covey will step down to only coach fast- and slow-pitch softball.

Panama girls have new basketball coach

Billy Leaptrot will now get his chance to live out his dream — coaching.
Leaptrot will be the new Panama Lady Razorbacks basketball coach, taking over for Dennis Wright who became the girls coach at Sallisaw-Central High School.
“I just graduated in May from UAFS [the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith], so this will be my first coaching job,” Leaptrot said Tuesday night at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse on his first day to see his new team. “I’m ready to hit the ground running.”

Sidewalk repair continues

Sidewalks along Dewey Avenue are under construction today [July 1] as the city upgrades them to be handicap accessible. Crews are pictured working at the corner of Peters and Dewey.

Children's author to visit library

Children's book author Darleen Bailey Beard is scheduled to make a presentation as part of the Summer Reading Program at Patrick Lynch Public Library in Poteau.
Her children's program "Make Like a Tree and Leaf!" will start at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 2, for grades three through eight.
Beard also will speak and have a book-signing for all ages at the library from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Patsy Jean Gilstrap

Patsy Jean Gilstrap, 83, of Poteau died Friday, June 27, 2014, in Poteau. Patsy was born in Dow-Hartshorne on March 22, 1931 to William Franklin and Isabell I. (Blair) Clay. She was a secretary at the courthouse for years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Poteau. Patsy was an avid reader. She was the “Best Mom in the World.” Patsy was preceded in death by her husband, Bob E. Gilstrap, on Feb. 11, 2002, and sister, Nancy Pierce.

LeFlore County welcomes Maidens of Mayhem

A new derby team has hit the rink in Poteau. The Maidens of Mayhem formed a few weeks ago and are recruiting team members. .
The Maidens hone their skills on Wednesday evening at Skate-Reation.
According to Ashford, Skate-Reation owner Nancy Traywick has offered to help the team by opening the rink on Tuesdays from 8:30-10:30 a.m. for anyone 18 and older who is interested in learning about derby. A derby team member will be at the rink to answer any questions or work one-on-one with someone who would like to learn or practice skating for derby.

Mass accident training exercise a success

A staged accident involving 16 students on a school bus that had wrecked and rolled onto its side as part of a training exercise was held Saturday near the Peter Conser Home. LeFlore County Emergency Medical Services, Tulsa Life Flight , AARC Towing and members of the Hodgen, Haw Creek, Post Mountain, Reichert-Summerfield and Post Mountain volunteer fire departments took part.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 30, at Mallory Martin Funeral Home Chapel in Spiro.

Gerald D. Blankenship

Hall of Fame Coach Gerald D. Blankenship, 87 of Tulsa, formerly of Spiro died June 25, 2014, in Tulsa.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, at Liberty Baptist Church in Tulsa and 4 p.m. that day at the First Baptist Church in Spiro.
