Tickets still remain for the Poteau Pirates’ football season opener in the Hooten’s Kickoff Classic against Alma, Ark., at Fort Smith [Ark.] Northside High School at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 4.
Tickets for adults and students cost $7 per person, while pre-schoolers will be admitted for free.
For those wishing to purchase tickets, call Poteau coach Greg Werner at (918) 839-4572 or come by the high school or football fieldhouse.

Forms may be picked up at Poteau City Hall. Cost is $35 per participant.

Fallin supports limited use of cannabis oil

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin says she supports the legalization of an oil derived from cannabis, but says she remains firmly opposed to legalizing all medical marijuana.

Fallin asked lawmakers Wednesday to support the legalization of cannabidiol, which is an oil derived from the marijuana plant. The oil can only be taken orally and is non-psychoactive. Research suggests it may be effective to treat toddlers with rare conditions that cause seizures and strokes.

Poteau girls get first win of season, beat Tahlequah

Just one day after being shutout by Wister pitcher Hunter Gibson and held to only five hits, the Poteau Lady Pirates softball team not only almost doubled its hit output with nine hits in Tuesday’s home game against the Tahlequah Lady Tigers but scored their first runs of the season. The end result was the Lady Pirates picked up their first win of the season with a 5-1 victory over the Lady Tigers.

Spiro, Wister girls playing Thursday night for spot in Pocola Tournament title game

POCOLA — The Spiro Lady Bulldogs and the Wister Lady Wildcats will play Thursday night for the right to battle for the championship of the 2014 Pocola Tournament.
The Lady Bulldogs edged the host Lady Indians 2-1, while the Lady Wildcats got past the Heavener Lady Wolves 7-2 in winner’s-bracket semifinals games on Tuesday.
The Lady Bulldogs and the Lady ’Cats will play at 7 p.m. Thursday for the right to be in Friday night’s title game at 6:30 p.m.

LEFLORE — Leflore pitcher Kaylee Roath threw a no-hitter as the Lady Savages routed the Webbers Falls Lady Warriors 14-0 in the first game of Tuesday afternoon’s doubleheader.
The Lady Savages completed the sweep with a 12-1 rout in the second game.
Howe 13, Buffalo Valley 4; Soper 11, Howe 5: In Buffalo Valley, the Lady Lions split their season openers in Tuesday’s road three-way.

Hearing set in lawsuit over Oklahoma executions

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A federal judge has scheduled a hearing for next month in a lawsuit filed by a group of death row inmates over Oklahoma's execution procedures.

U.S. District Judge Stephen Friot on Tuesday scheduled a hearing for Sept. 18 in the case, which was filed by 21 inmates following the April 29 botched execution of Clayton Lockett. The inmates are trying to halt any attempt to execute them using the state's current lethal injection protocols.
