Poteau boys Coal Miners Classic champions; Heavener beats Eufaula to win consolation title

WILBURTON — The Poteau Pirates made it 2-for-2 in winning tournaments on the weekend.
After winning the 32nd LeFlore County Tournament on April 7 in Cameron, the Pirates won the Coal Miners Classic 3-1 over the Muldrow Bulldogs in Saturday’s title game.
The Pirates reached the title game with an 8-0 shutout of the co-host Hartshorne Miners on Friday in Hartshorne.

Red Oak blanks Wister in Wister Tournament finals; Talihina captures third-place game, while Panama claims consolation championship

WISTER — The Red Oak Eagles flew 20 miles east to Wister and departed with a championship plaque Saturday afternoon after beating the host Wildcats 1-0 in the finals of the Wister Invitational Tournament.
The Eagles made the finals by getting past the Talihina Golden Tigers 6-4, while the ’Cats clawed the Whitesboro Bulldogs 14-0 in Friday night’s semifinals.
Two other LeFlore County teams claimed hardware on Saturday. The Panama Razorbacks handled the Howe Lions 12-0 in three innings to win the consolation championship.

Spiro boys fall in title game of Tiger Shootout to Vian; Pocola, Cameron also lose trophy games on Saturday

SALLISAW — Three LeFlore County baseball teams began play Thursday with chances to take home plaques at the 2013 Tiger Shootout at Sallisaw-Central High School. However, in the end, only one team got that honor.
The Spiro Bulldogs came in second in the tournament, losing the title game 12-8 in eight innings to the Vian Wolverines on Saturday. The Bulldogs reached the title game with an 8-1 win over the Keys (Park Hill) Cougars on Friday, followed by an 8-7 victory over Pocola in the semifinals on Friday.

Calling all cooks

A county Relay for Life team is sending out a call for recipes.
Cecil Woodward said the "Truckin' Out Cancer" team is raising funds for the annual event by putting together a cookbook and selling copies. Any recipes will be accepted, Woodward said.
The book should be complete by May 15 with copies for sale by June 1, he said.
This year's Relay for Life — a fundraising team walk — is scheduled for Sept. 7 at Costner Stadium.
Woodward said the team also is hoping to recruit more members.

LCYS hosts annual golf tournament

LeFlore County Youth Services Inc. will hold its 20th annual Golf Tournament on May 24 at the Choctaw Country Club in Poteau.
Registration begins at 9 a.m. and tee off is at 10 a.m. 
Proceeds of this event help finance non-funded programs for the agency, including summer recreational, missing children and the Adopt-An-Angel programs.
LCYS will provide lunch, drinks and door prizes.
The tourney will be four-person teams with an entry fee of $50 per person or $200 per team. Hole sponsorships are available for a $125 donation, which is tax deductible.

Two allegedly arrested after hostage situation

A report of people being held hostage in a home at Old U.S. Highway 59 resulted in law enforcement officers from multiple agencies surrounding the home.
Unofficial reports claim on person was arrested at the house while another fled on foot into a wooded area, armed with a shotgun.
A manhunt ensued with the use of police dogs while other officers created a perimeter surrounding the area.
At about 10:25 a.m., the person who fled into the woods was found by officers and arrested, according to law enforcement information.
It is unknown at this time if anyone was injured in the incident.

State-of-the-art library nearing completion

With the opening date drawing near for the Patrick Lynch Public Library, the finishing outside touches are being completed.
The new library, which is scheduled to open May 1, will replace the Buckley Public Library, located on Dewey Avenue. Until construction is complete, Buckley will remain open in its current capacity. After Patrick Lynch Public Library is completed, plans have been made to give the old facility to the Literacy Council of LeFlore County, which is now housed at Buckley.

Area youth center moves into new facility

Construction on the new headquarters for the LeFlore County Youth Services is completed and a new director has taken the reins.
The new 7000-square-foot facility houses not only the LCYS offices, but also the emergency children’s shelter. In the past, LCYS headquarters had been based out of the DIAL building on Dewey Avenue in downtown Poteau and the emergency children’s shelter had been based out of the Reed House near Pansy Kidd Middle School.

Poteau girls upset No. 1 Moore, but lose to Southmoore in Muskogee Festival

MUSKOGEE — The Poteau Lady Pirates softball team made a statement in Friday’s action in the Muskogee Festival.
Class 6A’s 10th-ranked Lady Pirates stunned Class 6A’s top-ranked Moore Lady Lions 9-6 in their second game of the day.
In Poteau’s other game, Southmoore used middle-inning offense to down the Lady Pirates 15-6.
