Karen LeFlore, 48, of Poteau died July 16, 2013 in  Poteau. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4, at the Poteau Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints under the direction of Evans and Miller Funeral Home.

Chorale auditions open this weekend

If you love music and are willing to work to perform with others, Cavanal Chorale is opening its doors for you this weekend.
Cavanal Chorale was organized in 2008 for the purpose of sharing choral music of high musical standards with Poteau and the surrounding areas, according to Chorale Conductor Noma Curtis.
"A variety of genres are rehearsed and presented in each themed concert series. These genres include classical, art songs, folk songs, musical theatre, sacred, humorous and patriotic," Curtis said.

Wister pavilion to be dedicated Saturday

The public is invited to the dedication of the Henry J. Heflin Pavilion on Saturday at Lake Wister State Park.
State Rep. James Lockhart and Sen. Jerry Ellis will be on hand for the ceremony along with Heflin family members and descendants.
The legislators sponsored a bill to authorize the naming of the Victor Camping Area pavilion in honor of Heflin, a LeFlore County pioneer who once owned the land where the camping area sits.

Wister pitcher closes game for Small East in All-State Game

TULSA — Tyler Gibson had his moments Tuesday night in the Small School All-State Baseball Game at J.L. Johnson Stadium on the campus of Oral Roberts University.
The 2013 Wister High School graduate came in relief of Caney Valley’s Kyle Knight in the sixth inning. In his two innings, he allowed a run on a hit, a walk and struck out a batter as the Small East beat the Small West 9-5.
“It was great,” Gibson said. “Coming out here and being able to close it, it was an honor to be able do it in the All-State Game."

Local youth has encounter with snake, wins the battle; Beast Feast in Muskogee coming up this month

How about this snake story? Eleven-year-old Gavin Garrett of Poteau was hanging out with his grandfather, Don Garrett, this week when they came across a five-foot, six-inch long rattlesnake in Don’s barn. The snake was nine inches around at its largest point, and had 13 rattles and a button.
When Gavin and Don found the big dude inside the door of his barn, Gavin shot it with a .22 pistol that he had with him only to realize that the pistol had rat shot in it.

John Robert "Bob" Gee

John Robert "Bob" Gee of McCurtain, 66, died away Monday, July 29, 2013 at his home, where he loved the view and astonishing variety of wildlife.
He was born Aug. 15, 1946, in Shreveport, La., to Arthur Johnson Gee and Josephine (Shaw) Gee. He graduated from Poteau High School in 1963. He attended Oklahoma Central University in Oklahoma City and worked for Tinker Air Force Base before moving to McCurtain in 1978 and starting Bob Gee Sales.

Talihina youth injured in accident

A Talihina youth was hospitalized after her car left the roadway and struck a tree.
According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Mariah Frederick, 16, of Talihina, was driving a 2008 Mitsubishi west on Oklahoma Highway 63 when her vehicle left the right side of the road and struck a tree.
Frederick was pinned inside her vehicle until she was freed 30 minutes later by the Whitesboro Fire Department.
