Charles A. Potter Sr.

March 1, 2013

Charley Potter Sr., 71, of Poteau died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, in Poteau. He was born Sept. 16, 1941, at Cameron to W.A. “Bill” and Stellie “Mae” (Smith) Potter. He was a self-employed carpenter and owner of Charley’s Construction.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters.

Lloyd Hale

Lloyd Hale, 81, of Panama died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, in Fort Smith, Ark. Lloyd was born April 3, 1931, in Bokoshe to James W. and Mollie (Poteet) Hale. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Korea. Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Loretta; sister, Berniece; and brothers, Haskell and Mousey.

Vike Hike date is set

The fourth annual Vike Hike 5K is set for Saturday, April 6.
Registration will be from 7-8 a.m. with a 9 a.m. pistol start at Carl Albert State College Poteau campus.
Entry fee is $20 for those mailing, faxing or delivering their entry forms by Monday, March 25. Later entries will cost $30. The fee is $10 for CASC students with a student ID. The first 250 participants will get chip timing, with awards going to the top three in each age category.
Vike Hike T-shirts will go to everyone who registers by March 25, and lunch will be provided for everyone immediately following the race.

Kiamichi Economic Development searching for vendors

The Kiamichi Economic Development District of Oklahoma Area Agency on Aging is accepting Requests for Proposals from interested vendors to provide respite and health promotion services to persons age 60 and older in Choctaw, Haskell, Latimer, LeFlore, McCurtain, Pittsburg and Pushmataha counties.
 The following services will be considered for funding: The National Family Caregivers Supportive Services on Respite Care for Caregivers and Respite Care for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren. Also being funded are disease prevention and health promotion services for evidence-based programs.

State Auditor speaks on fraud

Oklahoma Auditor Gary Jones spoke during the Chamber of Commerce's First Friday meeting held at the Kiamichi Technology Center in Poteau Friday afternoon.
Jones discussed fraud and prevention along with solutions and how audits can be requested to help increase transparency and promote accountability.

Silo ends season for Talihina girls; Golden Tigers play Preston tonight for area title, trip to state

WILBURTON — Last year, the Talihina Lady Golden Tigers saw their basketball season end at the Class 2A Area Tournament at the Wilburton High School gym. Unfortunately for them, the same thing happened Thursday afternoon.
A 3-point basket by Silo's Mary Grider with 15 seconds left lifted the Lady Rebels to a 38-37 win over the Lady Golden Tigers in the Class 2A Area Tournament consolation quarterfinals. The loss ended Talihina's season at 18-9.

Opening day 2013 has arrived on the diamond; Poteau's baseball opener moved to CASC

We're back! My favorite time of the year has arrived as the spring baseball and slow-pitch softball seasons will begin today for a few teams and most everyone else next week.
For those new to the area, this column runs usually every Tuesday morning with the ins and outs, ups and downs, what's upcoming, the weekly schedules in both sports and Pitchers and Hitters of the Week in each sport — by the way, coaches, you may nominate players for those honors is you wish.

I bet you all thought I had disappeared

It has been a while since I last wrote, and the sports world just keeps a rolling.
The Poteau boys and girls had a tough weeked in the Class 4A Regional Tournament in Fort Gibson as their seasons ended sooner than hoped.
The Poteau Pirates wrestling team finished ninth in the Class 4A State Tournament. Two-time defending state champion Tyler Tustin had a chance to three-peat, but he lost by two points in the finals.

Carl Albert baseball team sweeps home pair from University of the Ozarks JV

The Carl Albert State College Vikings returned to the friendly confines of Ival Goodman Field on Wednesday afternoon and took a pair of games from the University of the Ozarks junior varsity.
The Vikings took the opener 8-1, then defeated the visitors 13-1 in a five-inning, run-rule contest.
The Vikings will return to action Saturday as they hit the road for 1 p.m. doubleheader against Seminole State College.

Poteau Spirit Center gymnasts compete in Superstar Invitational

BARTLESVILLE — The Poteau Spirit Center had several gymnasts compete in Sunday's Superstar Invitational.
All four Silver Excel athletes placed in the top 15 in all-around. In the age 10-11 division, Michaela Wolf was eighth, Shyanne Hutchison was 10th and Keegan Hudlow was 14th. Cheyenne Wilbourn was third in all-around in the age 6-9 division.
In Level 4, Holly Bowman was fourth, Anniston Baker was seventh, Skylee Maynard was ninth and Allison Blagg was 11th in all all-around.
Level 1 and 3 gymnasts get ribbons for participating.
