Bass fishing, archery, hoops, what more could you want

February 21, 2013

One of the biggest events in the world of fishing will take place this week at Grand Lake. The BASSMaster Classic starts Friday and ends Sunday.
There will be several Oklahoma fishermen in the field for this event including, Edwin Evers and Tommy Biffle. The winner will bring home a $500,000 check. The weigh in will be at the Bank of Oklahoma (BOK) Center in Tulsa.

Carl Albert softball teams splits road games against Independence, Kan.; Thursday afternoon's home DH against Crowder, Mo., moved to Tuesday afternoon

INDEPENDENCE, Kan. — The Carl Albert State College softball team split its road doubleheader against Independence on Tuesday afternoon.
The Lady Vikings took the nightcap 11-8 after losing the opener 8-3.
The Lady Vikings' home doubleheader against Crowder, Mo., which was scheduled for a 2 p.m. start this afternoon, has been moved to 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Former Lady Vikings, Viking basketball players making an impact with new teams; Wednesday night's CASC games canceled, rescheduled for Saturday afternoon

Several former Carl Albert State College Lady Viking and Viking basketball players are making an impact with their new collegiate teams.
Katie BenAmor, a 5-11 senior forward from Howe, is playing at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith, which is a NCAA Divison II school and a member of the Heartland Conference.
Lindsay McCown is a 6-foot senior forward from Heavener and is currently playing at East Central University in Ada, which is a NCAA Division II school and a member of the Great American Conference.

Panama duo wins FFA Fishing Tournament Monday afternoon

Trace Brooks and Nacona Steelman won Monday afternoon's Panama High School Future Farmers of America (FFA) Fishing Tournament. The Razorbacks duo hauled in 32 pounds of fish.
Tournament competitors could fish anywhere in LeFlore County.
Dillan Fout and Chase Hatcher caught the biggest crappie, weighing 2.4 pounds.
Justin Burks not only had the honor of catching the biggest bass (weighing 5.3 pounds), he also caught in the biggest perch (11 ounces).
Jacob Caldwell and Bradley Harris caught the biggest catfish, weighing seven pounds.

Winter weather may delay newspaper delivery

In case of icy road conditions, Poteau Daily News carriers will attempt to deliver to subscribers. However, we do not ask our carriers to risk wrecking their vehicles and getting stranded in freezing temperatures.

If they can safely get down a subscriber's road, they will deliver the paper. If not, we ask that subscribers be patient. We will get the paper delivered as soon as possible.

Area schools close early due to winter weather

February 20, 2013

Several area schools closed early today due to winter weather making travel hazardous.
Pocola Schools closed at 11:30 a.m.
Panama Schools are not closing early but will be closed Thursday
Wister Schools are closing at 1 p.m.
Shady Point Schools are closing at 12:15 p.m.
Other schools within the county are allowing parents to pick up children early but are not closing due to children who may not have someone at their home.

EOMC welcomes new doctor to staff

A new physician is joining the team at Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center in Poteau.
The board of trustees of the LeFlore County Hospital Authority unanimously agreed to enter into contract with Dr. Doug Duke, D.O., during its regular meeting Tuesday afternoon.

Winter weather blows into LeFlore County

February 20, 2013

According to the National Weather Service, LeFlore County will remain under a winter weather advisory until noon Thursday.
Other counties included in the advisory are Cherokee, Adair, Creek, Wagoner, Tulsa, Rogers, Mayes, Pittsburg, Sequoyah, Latimer and Haskell. Sebastian County in Arkansas is also under advisory.

NEO teams sweep Carl Albert; CASC teams hit the road tonight for games against Seminole State

A career-high 12 points from Acorn, Ark., player Abby Ledbetter wasn't enough for the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings in their 66-55 loss to the Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College Lady Norse on Monday night at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.
Frederico Santos' double-double of 22 points and 16 rebounds proved to be the difference for the NEO Golden Norsemen in their 71-61 win over the Vikings in the second game of Monday night's doubleheader.

Jefferson College hands CASC first baseball loss of 2013 season; Vikings' home game this afternoon rained out

The Carl Albert State College baseball team suffered its first loss of the 2013 season Saturday afternoon at Ival Goodman Field in its home opener. Jefferson College of Missouri came to town and left with a 16-6 victory.
The Vikings' home doubleheader this afternoon against Paris (Texas) Junior College has been rained out, and has not been rescheduled.
Last week's road twinbill against Coffeyville (Kan.) College has been rescheduled for April 9, but the site of the games have not been determined at this time.
