New season begins for Poteau basketball girls with high hopes — and new coach; Lady Pirates end up getting first-round bye at Keys Cougars Invitational, won't play until Thursday afternoon in semifinals

December 2, 2012

Editor's note — This is the second of a two-part series previewing the Poteau High School basketball teams.
Last season, the Poteau Lady Pirates basketball team was the Cinderella story of the 2012 LeFlore County high school basketball playoffs. After ending the regular season at 5-18 last season, the Lady Pirates won three of five playoff games, won the Class 4A District Tournament, were consolation champions at the regional tournament and got to within three wins of the state tournament.

Wilburton teams sweep Panama in basketball openers Thursday night

December 1, 2012

WILBURTON — The high school basketball season got started for the Panama teams Thursday night, but in the end both squads suffered heartbreaking losses.
A fourth-quarter spurt where Wilburton scored quickly and Panama had a momentary defensive lapse allowed the Lady Diggers to prevail 47-39 over the Lady Razorbacks.
It was much the same for the Hogs as they had a two-point lead with three minutes left, only to see the Diggers end the game with a run to snatch a 46-42 win away from the Razorbacks.
