Next week cannot get here fast enough for football players, coaches

Ever since the 2012 football seasons ended for LeFlore County's high school teams, next week probably seems like it wasn't going to get here. But it's here now.
High school football practice will begin next week, with most of the teams beginning practice on Monday — with a couple not going until the traditional Tuesday.

Emergency crews kept busy Friday

LeFlore County Emergency Medical Services and the Poteau Fire Department responded to the emergency call of a 53-year-old man who was injured when he fell off a ladder at a home on Cavanal, according to dispatch information.
Emergency responders said a landing zone was set up for the arrival of a Tulsa Life Flight medical helicopter that took the man to a Tulsa hospital to be treated for fractures to his legs.

Passenger of wrecked car jailed

Poteau police responded to the call of a car on its side in a deep ditch on Harper Street near the Page Street intersection Friday about 4 p.m. According to radio communications, the driver of the car fled the scene and police began a search of the area. The driver was not located.
According to officers, it appeared the car struck a low water bridge then landed on its side in the ditch. Police said the passenger, Travis Armstrong, 33, was arrested for public intoxication and taken to the LeFlore County Detention Center.
Officer Cody Johnson investigated the accident.

Severe storms cause damage in county

Strong storms blew through the northern portion of LeFlore County Thursday evening leaving downed trees and power lines in their wake.
At about 6 p.m., the National Weather Service warned towns north of Poteau to prepare for severe thunderstorms. Not long after, several residents in Panama and Poteau found themselves without electricity.
"The 911 center relied on backup generators all night," said Emergency Management Director Michael Davidson.
According to police, about 150 people were without electricity in Panama and an unknown number in Poteau.

Poteau High School students who will participate in extra-curricular activities this upcoming school year will have their drug testing take place this month inside the senior hall of the high school.
Drug testing will take place from 8 a.m. to noon Wednesday.
Cost is $10 cash per student.

Keller, Guest win final LCBC open bass tournament of 2013

The LeFlore County Bass Club had its final open tournament of 2013 last weekend at Wards Landing on Wister Lake.
There were 16 boats that hauled in 46 fish weighing a composite 110.12 pounds. The average fish weighed 2.39 pounds, and seven limits were caught.
The duo of Jerrid Keller and Chase Guest took first place with a stringer weighing 15.78 pounds, which included Keller's big bass winner of 6.19 pounds. The duo pocketed $350, while Keller got an additional $140 for his big bass winner.

Robert Ben Sizemore, 38, of Fort Smith, Ark., died Saturday, July 27, 2013.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 10., at Calhoun Baptist Church in Shady Point with the Rev. Steve Hughes officiating.

Nyla M. Shepherd

Nyla M. Shepherd, 92, of Fort Smith, Ark., formerly of Poteau, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, in Fort Smith.
Nyla was born Dec. 8, 1920 in Sallisaw to John and Ellie (Head) Shepherd. She was a bookkeeper. Nyla was a devout Catholic. She was a member of the Franciscan Order in New Orleans, 3rd Order. She received the honor of being Volunteer of the Year in New Orleans for her work with the homeless. She lived to serve her God and her church.
