Poteau Spirit Center names February Stars of the Month

Several students at the Poteau Spirit Center got the good news this month that they were named Stars of the Month.
Three PSC cheerleaders who were so honored were Makaylee Wilson, Graicey Dorsey and Emily Rodriguez.
Eight PSC gymnasts were named Stars of the Month — Billie McNatt, Lucky Athey, Samantha Osterhout, Abbey Long, Piper Akins, Madelyn Long and Kaylee Hogrefe.

Carl Albert baseball team goes 1-2 in road series against Tyler; Vikings return home for Wednesday afternoon’s doubleheader against University of the Ozarks JV

TYLER, Texas — The Carl Albert State College baseball team went 1-2 on its weekend road series against Tyler Junior College.
The Vikings won the opener 7-3 on Friday night, but dropped both games of Saturday’s doubleheader 3-2 and 4-1.
The Vikings will entertain the University of the Ozarks junior varsity for a doubleheader beginning at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Ival Goodman Field.

Thunder snaps losing skid with home wins over T-Wolves, Bulls

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma City Thunder hasn't exactly picked up the pace in the second half of the season, losing three straight around the All-Star break before finally knocking off the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night at Chesapeake Energy Arena to get back on the winning track.
The win at home over Minnesota was the first of three straight within the friendly confines of Chesapeake Energy Arena, the longest home streak left in the season.

Lake Wister and Talimena state parks have joined to promote a heart healthy hiking program this year.
A hike will take place each month, alternating between the two state parks.
The next hike will take place at Lake Wister State Park's Wards Landing Campground on March 9.
All hikes will begin at 1 p.m. Bottled water will be provided at each month's hike.

Afternoon accident causes traffic jam

According to the Poteau Police Department, a gold minivan was attempting to cross South Broadway from Conser Street when it collided with a white SUV traveling south on Broadway.
The collision caused the white SUV to spin around and turn over, coming to rest on it's top.
No one was injured in the accident.
Traffic was detoured onto South McKenna and Church Street during the investigation and removal of the damaged vehicles.

Spiro mounds hosts vernal equinox walks

Come celebrate the beginning of spring a little differently this year. On March 20 and 21, there will be a series of guided vernal equinox walks at Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center, where you can learn from an archaeologist and ask questions.

Alleged coon-dog killer collared

“This is one of the worst cases I have worked in which hunting dogs were killed for no reason,” said Lt. Donnie Edwards of the LeFlore County Sheriff's Department.
Edwards' statement was made after a Poteau man allegedly opened fire, killing two hounds trained to track raccoon. A third coon dog was injured in the shooting.
Douglas Slade Frerich, 42, of Poteau was booked into the LeFlore County Detention Center on three counts of felony animal cruelty after the Friday night shooting.

Heavener boys lose to Westville in Class 3A regional consolation finals to see season end; Lady Wolves' season concludes with loss to Vian

MUSKOGEE — The Heavener Wolves basketball team saw its season come to an end with a 46-40 loss Monday afternoon to the Westville Yellowjackets in the consolation finals of the Class 3A Regional Tournament at the Muskogee Civic Center.
The Wolves, who end the season at 18-9, opened the regional tournament with a 58-42 loss to the Kansas Comets on Friday night, but bounced back with a thrilling 50-49 overtime win over the Vian Wolverines on Saturday afternoon.
