The LeFlore County District Attorney's office announced at a press conference this morning that the remains of an infant child have not yet been found. This three day search stems from an ongoing investigation regarding a child abuse probe and other allegations near Monroe. A forensic anthropologist with the State Coroner's office and a cadaver dog are being used to assist in the search. Further details could not be released at this time.
The Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings will open their 2011-12 basketball season in the Panola (Texas) Classic.
The Lady Vikings' first game will be at 7 p.m. Friday against host Panola College. Their second game will be at 2 p.m. Saturday against Jacksonville College.
Panola will look to speed things up against the Lady Vikings.
The Cameron High School basketball teams will begin their 2011-12 seasons tonight at McCurtain. The girls' game will tip off at 6:30 p.m., followed by the boys' contest at 8 p.m.
The Howe High School basketball teams will get the 2011-12 season under way tonight on the road at Smithville. The Lady Lions will play at 6:30 p.m., followed by the Lions at 8 p.m.
On Aug. 9, all high school football teams began practice with the hopes that they would make not only the postseason but win state. Two LeFlore County football teams are essentially playing a playoff game when the Pocola Indians (5-4, 1-4 in District 2A-6) visit the Heavener Wolves (4-5, 2-3) at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Harvey Stadium.
The bottom line is this — the winner will make the playoffs and the loser will have its season end.
Last week's 59-56 heartbreaking loss to Fort Gibson ended any postseason hopes for the Poteau Pirates. But the Pirates can still end the season strong by winning their final game of the season, which will be at 7:30 tonight on the road against the Muldrow Bulldogs, coached by former Poteau Assistant Coach Rob Johnson.
The Pirates (4-5, 2-4 in District 4A-4) were still hoping that even with last week's loss that the postseason was still attainable.
There's one thing which will happen when Maud (4-5, 3-3 in District C-4) visits Bokoshe (1-7, 0-6) at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the regular-season finale. The Tigers will win, since both teams' mascots are Tigers.
Maud was last year's District C-4 champions, but have already lost three district games after having close to eight seasons without a district defeat. So, first-year Bokoshe Coach Tyler Massey hopes that will help the local Tigers out tonight.
With this being the last night of the regular season of high school football, there are a couple of key match-ups tonight.
Without a doubt, the blockbuster game is Pocola at Heavener. The winner is in the postseason, and rewarded with a road playoff game against Class 2A's third-ranked Stroud Tigers.
