Poteau soccer teams split road games against Wagoner

March 13, 2013

WAGONER — The Poteau Pirates came out in the opening half, behind Ashby Clark's hat trick, and pulled out to a 5-0 lead at the intermission and then posted the 8-0 victory over the Wagoner Bulldogs on Tuesday night.
The Lady Pirates were not as fortunate. The Lady Bulldogs came out in the half and kept the pressure on Poteau's defense en route to a 6-1 victory.

Heavener soccer teams open season with home wins over Wickes, Ark.

HEAVENER — The 2013 high school soccer seasons got under way in fine fashion for the Heavener High School teams as they swept Wickes, Ark. on Tuesday at Harvey Stadium.
The Lady Wolves had to go into a shootout before downing Wickes 6-5, then the Wolves handled Wickes 6-1.
The Heavener teams will return to action Thursday as they entertain the McAlester Lady Buffaloes and Buffaloes at Harvey Stadium. The girls game will begin at 5 p.m., then the boys contest at 7 p.m.

Fishing and NWTF Banquet

Fishing season is here, and my bass fishing mentor, Chuck Restine, has fished in four tournaments — and been in the money in all four. I have to get hooked up with him soon and catch some bass. Just the other day, he caught two four-pound bass on an Alabama rig. He said there were three on it before he got it into the boat. Man, I wish I was there to have seen that!

William Webb ‘Bill’ Langdell

William Webb “Bill” Langdell, 59, of Poteau died Tuesday, March 12, 2013, in Poteau. Bill was born May 30, 1953 in Holtville, Calif., to Jack Sr. and Naomi (Perry) Langdell. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a truck driver. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Chester Langdell.

Ruby Colleen Langston Huddleston

Colleen Huddleston, 90, of Heavener died March 12, 2013, in Heavener. She was born February 24, 1923, in Heavener to J.D. and Jessie Lee (Spoon) Langston. She was a retired case worker supervisor for the Oklahoma State Welfare Department in LeFlore County, where she worked for 35 years. Colleen loved music; she played the piano over 50 years at various churches in the area and played for 25 years at Perry Chapel Church. She was a devoted Christian, loved her family and friends and also loved cats and dogs.

Guy E. Cantrell

Guy E. Cantrell, 84, of Derby, Kan., died Tuesday, March 12, 2013.
He was a retired aircraft mechanic. He is survived by his sons, Larry Cantrell, Wayne Cantrell, Wayne Billingsley, Steve Billingsley and Bruce Billingsley; daughters, Jenny Williamson, Connie Helm and Sandy Rogers; stepdaughter, Lisa Billy; 28 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and sisters-in-law, Florene Cantrell and Rosie Cantrell.

DA files papers to seek death penalty in Johnathen Thacker case

LeFlore County District Attorney Jeff Smith filed a bill of particulars Wednesday morning stating that he will seek the death penalty in the case of Johnathen Don James Edward Thacker, 24, of Cedarville, Ark., who was scheduled to appear for his district court arraignment Wednesday afternoon on charges of first-degree murder and forcible sodomy in the September 2010 death of 22-year-old Brianna Ault of Pocola.
Thacker is being represented by Oklahoma Indigent Defense System attorneys Bobby Lewis and Gary Henry, both of Norman.

Monday's High School Softball Roundup

HEAVENER — The Heavener Lady Wolves softball team got a pair of wins on its home field on Monday, beating the Cameron Lady Yellowjackets 7-2 and the Whitesboro Lady Bulldogs 17-0.
The middle game went to the Lady ’Jackets, 8-1 over the Lady Bulldogs.
Wister 8, Buffalo Valley 2: In Buffalo Valley, having to move the game from Wister to Buffalo Valley did not bother the Lady Wildcats a bit.
Wister broke a scoreless tie with a three-run third inning for a 3-0 lead.

Poteau girls win Heavener Invitational track meet

HEAVENER — The 2013 LeFlore County track season got underway in fine fashion for the Poteau Lady Pirates as they won the Heavener Invitational on Tuesday afternoon at Harvey Stadium.
The Lady Pirates had 152 points, finishing ahead of runner-up Broken Bow (113 points), Vian (84), host Heavener (72), Quinton (55), Howe (39) and Spiro (26).
In the boys division, Quinton won the team title with 130 points, followed by Broken Bow (108 points), Poteau (93), Vian (88), Spiro (81), Valliant (34), Heavener (23), Savanna (19), Muldrow (17), Antlers (11) and Howe (nine).
