The Heavener Wolves got what may have been the biggest win in quite a while last Friday night, beating the Talihina Golden Tigers 27-13 at Doc Robinson Stadium.
“It was a good win for the kids,” Heavener Coach John Thompson said. “The kids went in and played like they were supposed to. They played like they wanted to win. They started out that way, and they never let up. It was the best game we've played this year.”
The bad news is that the Wolves have to wait a week before getting to play again. For the second straight season, the Tahlequah Tigers junior varsity canceled out on them.

April Lynne Gilgo, 35, of Shady Point died Friday, Oct.
14, 2011, in Hodgen. Graveside services will be held at 4
p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at Shady Point Cemetery under the
direction of Evans and Miller Funeral Home, Poteau.
Daniel Levi Drummonds, 25, of Keota
died Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011, near Keota. He
was born May 26, 1986, in Fort Smith,
Ark., to Dan and Patricia Sandlin
Drummonds.
He is survived by his wife, Falecia of
the home; children, Diesel Drummonds
and Danielle Drummonds of the home;
parents, Dan and Patricia Drummonds of
Keota; two sisters, Dara Ward of Keota and Tiffany Real
and husband, Travis, of Panama; grandparents, Levi and
Loustana Drummonds of Keota; mother-in-law, Shelly
Woods of Keota; sister-in-law, Mikayla Hale of Keota;
Poteau High School has announced its upcoming production
of the Kaufman and Hart classic "You Can’t Take It With
You" under the direction of new English, Speech, and Drama
instructor Lauren Peck.
Peck, a native of Poteau, says she is pleased to return home
and to work with the youth of the Poteau community.
“I’ve always wanted to make my way back here,” said
Peck. For the past seven years, Peck attended college and
taught in western Kansas. “It feels wonderful to be back with
people who know me and sharing what I love with students.”

The owner of a Poteau business is
facing several sex-related criminal
charges after investigators discovered
his collection of child pornography
when allegations of attempted
molestation of two young girls surfaced.
Marty Hester, 52, of Hodgen,
owner of Computer Helpers, a computer
repair and internet cafe business
located at 113 South Witte in
Poteau, was formally charged with
aggravated possession of child pornography
and two counts of lewd or
indecent acts to children under 16
stemming from an incident that
occurred in April.
Poteau Lady Pirate sophomore golfer Hannah Ward won the Oklahoma Junior Golf Tournament of Champions last weekend at Tulsa's Page Belcher. She competed against the top 27 young female golfers in the state, and came out on top with a score of 75-76—151.
Needless to say, it was a unique experience for the sophomore golfer.
“I was thrilled to win the tournament this weekend,” Ward said. “I was very surprised to win. I went into the tournament with a positive attitude and determination to stay focused. My greatest fear was that I would get frustrated and give up, but I didn't.”
In Tuesday's edition, incorrect information appeared in the story about the Heavener cross country runners participating at the Class 3A Regional Meet.
This year, only the top five teams at the regional meet qualified all their runners to state. Since the Lady Wolves were sixth and the Wolves seventh, they did not make state as a complete team.
Only one Heavener runner, Jose Farias, qualified for this weekend's Class 3A State Meet at 2 p.m. Saturday at Shawnee's Gordon Cooper Vo-Tech Center.
STILWELL — The third-grade, fourth-grade and sixth-grade Poteau Bandit League teams posted wins Saturday in Stilwell.
The third-grade defeated Stilwell 6-0 as Colton Williamson scored on the third play of the game, a 61-yard scamper to pay dirt. From there, it was a defensive tussle — and it was defense which iced the game for Poteau.
Jordan Tom recovered a Stilwell fumble which was caused by Jacques Adams with 1:27 left to play, and Poteau ran out the clock.
Last week, the Arkoma Mustangs, although slow starting, pulled away from the Midway Chargers to end up mercy ruling them 86-36 last Friday night at home in a battle of District C-4 heavyweights.
“It was back and forth,” Arkoma Coach Mark Weatherton said. “They were stuffing it down our throats. It was only 30-28 in the second quarter, and I was nervous. We then reeled off 42 straight points, and then I felt better. We played a good game, and it was nice to get a big win like that over a pretty good team.”
