Poteau faces another must-win football game tonight at Broken Bow; new coach, senior TE will get to face former players

October 26, 2012

When the final three football games of the season were approaching, the Poteau Pirates knew that they had to go 3-0 to make the playoffs.
The Pirates took care of the first game, a 41-21 win over Muldrow on Oct. 18 at Costner Stadium.
“We played real well,” said Greg Werner, Poteau's first-year coach. “Muldrow is a team that's played a lot of people close. It felt good to get that one out of the way, and get back to our winning ways. Hopefully, we can get on a roll again. We're beat up, but we're ready to go.”

Golf brought Hartford teen, dad closer together before his death

October 25, 2012

In her father's eyes, Lauren Grace Ford of Hartford, Ark., has always been a star. Her father introduced Lauren to many sports from T-ball to basketball, which are just two ways Gary Ford found time to spend with his daughter.
Gary was always by her side, coaching her each step of the way, but the greens of the fairway and Lauren's love for golf brought this father-daughter duo even closer. As proud mom, Sharon Ford stood back and watched and cheered. Lauren ,with the help of her daddy, learned to dominate the course.

An eggs-tremely fun time at 2012 BalloonFest

October 25, 2012

I would like to thank everyone who came out to the 2012 BalloonFest last weekend, and threw eggs at Alan Hensley and yours truly in our “egganator” again this year. All the money raised went to the fourth-grade Poteau Bandit League football team. I would also like to thank Price Cutter for giving us a few eggs.
Nine-year-old Harley Jordan of Lequire and 50-year-old Cheryl Wineland of Panama were our top throwers this year. They both had strong arms with deadly accuracy. To say we got egg on our faces is an understatement.

When the Poteau Pirates snapped their two-game football losing streak last Thursday night at Costner Stadium with their 41-21 victory over former Poteau assistant coach Rob Johnson and his Muldrow Bulldogs, it kept the Pirates' postseason aspirations alive.
“It was pretty big,” senior defensive end Dylan Stone said about the victory. "We had lost over the previous couple of weeks. We needed that win real bad. It's gotten us up and ready for this week.”
