First week of spring football practice has been a good one for Pirates; spring game slated Thursday night at Costner Stadium

May 17, 2013

The first week of this spring’s football practice has been a good one, at least in the mind of first-year coach Greg Werner.
“Things are going very well,” he said. “We have a lot more kids out and participating. We’re definitely getting a head start on where we’re at compared at this time last year. We’re feeling good about things.”
Next week will end the spring practices, which themselves will culminate with the spring game at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Costner Stadium.

DeRosa denied clemency

May 17, 2013

The Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board denied clemency for James L. DeRosa, 36, Friday morning with a 3-2 vote during a special meeting in Oklahoma City.
DeRosa was sentenced to death in the murders of Curtis and Gloria Plummer.
The Plummers were found dead inside their home in October 2000, stabbed multiple times and with their throats cuts.
An investigation into the murders hastened along after accomplice Scotty White, now 29, informed a school counselor he knew who murdered the Plummers.
White named Derosa and John Eric Castleberry, now 39.

Poteau netter figured he might as well represent Pirates on tennis court

May 17, 2013

Since Poteau High School sophomore Skylar Abbott has been on the tennis court for several years, it only seemed natural that he try to do so as an Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association athlete.
For the last two years, Abbott has been fortunate enough to represent the Pirates on the tennis court.
“I’ve been playing since I was about 9,” Abbott said. “I figured I should be able to play for my school, and give my school a little more credit in another sport than it already has.”
