After a rough first three innings in Wednesday night's Class 4A Regional Tournament winner's-bracket final against Fort Gibson, the Poteau Lady Pirates made a nice rally. But the bad news was the rally fell short as the Lady Tigers prevailed 5-4.
October 7th
Two men accused of
murder have been returned
to LeFlore County to stand
trial.
Kevin Paul Statham,
50, and Suhail Mohammad
Shanti, 48, have both been
accused of separate murders
in LeFlore County.
They were both apprehended
in the northern
United States and recently
transported to the LeFlore
County Detention Center.
Statham is accused of
the murder of his mother
and father in June. As
previously reported by
PDN, Paul Statham, 70,
and Helen Statham, 69,
were found dead from
apparent gunshot wounds
at their home on Old
Bokoshe Rd. after their
other son became concerned

October 6th
Flora Ferrell, 85, of Flower Hill died Monday, Oct. 3,
2011, in Fort Smith, Ark. She was born June 25, 1926, in
Spiro. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, at New
Beginnings Church in Spiro. Burial will follow in the New
Hope Cemetery under the direction of Mallory-Martin
Funeral Home and Crematory of Spiro.
Cecil Marshall, 88, of Howe died Oct. 5, 2011, in
Heavener. He was born March 25, 1923, in Monroe to
Charley and Mattie (Fisher) Marshall. He was a contractor.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
Cecil is survived by his wife, Wanda Marshall; five
sons and daughters-in-law, Andrew and Jean Marshall of
Rogers, Ark., Mark and Sandy Marshall of Poteau, Rick
and Freda Marshall of Harrison, Ark., Nathan and Kathern
Marshall of Poteau, and Gordon and Regina Marshall of
Rogers; three daughters and sons-in-law, Martina
Livingston of Poteau, Vicky and Stan Ellis of Poteau,
Booth Dean Grey, 71, of Summerfield
died Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011 in
Summerfield. Dean was born Oct. 17,
1939, in Summerfield to Malcolm and
Bessie (Hollan) Grey. He was a member
of the International Brotherhood
Electrical Workers and a veteran of the
U.S. Army. He loved helping people,
hunting, fishing, dogs and horses. He
was preceded in death by his birth parents; foster parents,
Jacob and Margie James; sisters and brothers-in-law,
Eunice and Joe Bandoni, Bobbie and Curly Cooper. He
loved and was so proud his kids, his grandkids, and his
good friends.
Ella Louise Chumley, 66, of Panama
died Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011, in Fort
Smith, Ark. Ella was born July 29, 1945,
in Galveston, Texas, to Newlin Burg Jr.
and Waltina Nadean (Finley) Travis. Ella
was a retired teacher. In her career she
taught in Talihina, Catoosa and Pocola
Public Schools. Ella belonged to The
Delta Kappa Gamma Society International,
her professional organization for 30 years. She was currently
serving as DKG Beta Lambda Chapter Secretary
and on the DKG State Nominations Committee as well as
the Educational Excellence Committee. She was a past
Thanksgiving is quickly approaching
and with it comes a time for families to
gather together and find time to enjoy
each other’s company and reflect on all
the things in life there are to be thankful
for. However, there are those in our community
who all too often find themselves
alone during the holidays. One local
man, however, has made it his mission to
provide a Thanksgiving dinner for those
who would otherwise be alone.
For the past seven years, Jim Berngen
has been serving up hot meals to his
community with The Annual Thanksgiving
Community Dinner.
An Oklahoma City man who was
allegedly found passed out behind the
wheel of his vehicle while parked on a
county road near Spiro has been formally
charged by the LeFlore County District
Attorney’s Office with being in actual
physical control of a motor vehicle while
under the influence. Since this is his
second or subsequent offense, the charge
is a felony that could result in prison
time if convicted.
Timothy Scott Carter, 32, of Oklahoma
City, was arrested on September 21 after
a passerby reported a vehicle parked in
the road.
