Alleged coon-dog killer collared

“This is one of the worst cases I have worked in which hunting dogs were killed for no reason,” said Lt. Donnie Edwards of the LeFlore County Sheriff's Department.
Edwards' statement was made after a Poteau man allegedly opened fire, killing two hounds trained to track raccoon. A third coon dog was injured in the shooting.
Douglas Slade Frerich, 42, of Poteau was booked into the LeFlore County Detention Center on three counts of felony animal cruelty after the Friday night shooting.

Heavener boys lose to Westville in Class 3A regional consolation finals to see season end; Lady Wolves' season concludes with loss to Vian

MUSKOGEE — The Heavener Wolves basketball team saw its season come to an end with a 46-40 loss Monday afternoon to the Westville Yellowjackets in the consolation finals of the Class 3A Regional Tournament at the Muskogee Civic Center.
The Wolves, who end the season at 18-9, opened the regional tournament with a 58-42 loss to the Kansas Comets on Friday night, but bounced back with a thrilling 50-49 overtime win over the Vian Wolverines on Saturday afternoon.

Whitesboro boys’ season concludes three games shy of state tournament; Bulldogs lose area consolation quarterfinals to Bennington

KINGSTON — The good news for the Whitesboro Bulldogs is they were three wins from the Class B State Tournament when they took the court in the area tournament consolation quarterfinals Thursday night against the Bennington Bears.
The bad news was that was as close to state as they got as a strong fourth quarter propelled the Bears to a 36-31 win over the ‘Dogs, who ended their season at 20-10.

Talihina boys upset Oktaha in OT to win regional title; a victory away from state; Lady Golden Tigers fall in championship game, but still makes area tournament; season ends for Panama girls

TALIHINA — Momentum seemingly was on the side of the Oktaha Tigers when Devon Fry's 3-point basket with 1.5 seconds left in regulation tied the score at 45-all to force overtime in the Class 2A Regional Tournament title game Saturday night on Chris Gillespie Court at Ray Henson Gymnasium.
However, in OT it was all Talihina as Alan Lockhart drained eight points, all from the free-throw line, as the Golden Tigers upset the Tigers 60-52 to claim the regional title in front of a frantic home crowd.

Spiro boys lose regional final to Hugo, but still make area; Lady Bulldogs see season end with loss to Davis

ANTLERS — The good news is the Spiro Bulldogs basketball team is still alive for a chance at a state title. The bad news is they cannot lose another playoff game if the ’Dogs hope to make state.
The Bulldogs lost 57-54 in overtime to the Hugo Buffaloes in Saturday night’s Class 3A Regional Tournament title game.

Seminole State teams sweep Carl Albert; Monday night's home basketball games against NOC-Tonkawa moved to today, tonight

SEMINOLE — Despite having three double-figure scorers against Seminole State College, it wasn't enough for the Carl Albert State College Vikings in their 68-47 loss to the Trojans on Saturday afternoon.
D. Brown's 18 points weren't enough for the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings in their 76-51 loss to the Seminole State College Lady Belles on Saturday afternoon.

Rick Adams, 51, of Poteau, formerly of Van Buren, Ark., died Saturday, Feb. 23, in a local nursing home.
He is survived by his wife, Zenda, of the home; three daughters, Carrie Keith of Muldrow, Amanda Ryan of Van Buren and Brittany Adams of Alma, Ark.; two sisters, Susan Means of Fort Smith, Ark., and Mary Burkhart of Rudy, Ark.; three brothers, Tommy Adams of Ozark, Ark., Glenn Adams of Fort Smith and Wally Adams of Van Buren; and five grandchildren.

John C. ‘J.C’ Jones

John C. “J.C.” Jones, 68, of Greenwood, Ark., died Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, in a Fort Smith hospital. He was a retired truck driver. 
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, at Greenhill Cemetery in Cameron under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood. 
He is survived by his wife, Mary; one son, J.R. Jones of Spiro; four daughters, Tammy Diedrich of Summerfield, Jennifer Turner of Oklahoma, Janet Taylor of Greenwood and Phyllis Hogan of Greenwood; one sister, Joyce Towler of Bokoshe, and 11 grandchildren.

Lois Hinds, 95, of Heavener died Saturday, Feb. 23, in Heavener.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, at First Baptist Church in Heavener. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Poteau under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home.
