On Monday, Gov. Mary Fallin announced she was declaring a State of Emergency for 25 counties in Oklahoma, including LeFlore County.
The declaration is an amendment to the original declaration made May 19.
The recent severe weather, tornadoes, straight-line winds, flooding and damaging hail that have ravaged the state has caused numerous fatalities and injuries as well as extensive property damages.
STILLWATER (AP) â A hearing for a former Oklahoma State University student charged with sexual battery has been delayed.
A preliminary hearing was set in Payne County for Monday for 22-year-old Nathan Cochran [of Heavener]. A lawyer for Cochran told the Tulsa World on Monday the proceeding was being rescheduled.
The attorney, Jay Husbands, said a new hearing date could be set later in the day.
The hearing is to determine whether there is sufficient evidence for Cochran to be tried.
After two competency evaluations, Special Judge Jeff Singer has ruled that Elvis Aaron Thacker, 25, will stand trial in the death of Brian Jane Ault.
Thacker and his brother Johnathen Don James Edward Thacker, 24, were charged with multiple violent crimes in Oklahoma and Arkansas, in connection with the discovery of the body of victim Briana Jane Ault, 22, in a pond near Pocola on Sept. 13, 2010.
Thacker is scheduled to appear Aug. 15 at 9 a.m. for preliminary hearing proceedings.
Recent flooding in the southern portion of LeFlore County has resulted in local emergency management seeking a disaster declaration from the Governor.
An early morning house fire has destroyed the home of a Summerfield family.
At about 12:30 a.m. Saturday morning, the home of Barbara Grey burned to the ground, according to neighbors.
Grey was at home at the time of the fire and was able to get out safely.
Multiple fire departments responded to the blaze and was able to keep the fire from spreading to nearby storage buildings and a barn.
Grey's daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren who live with her, were not home at the time of the fire.
Jerry Wayne Fulks, 65, of Talihina died Thursday, May 30, 2013 in Talihina.Â Jerry was born July 28, 1947, in Summerfield to John Henry and Ellen (Smith) Fulks. Jerry was a graduate of Leflore High School where he played basketball. Jerry married Cheri (Queener) Fulks on Oct. 21, 1988. He coached basketball for 28 years at Lone Grove Schools. He loved to fish and hunt. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandkids. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters and one brother.
Glen S. âPonchoâ Newburn, 85, a lifelong resident of Wister, passed from this life to be with his Lord and Savior Thursday, May 30, 2013, in Fort Smith, Ark. Glen as born June 20, 1927, in Wister to Charley and Helen (Myers) Newburn.Â Glen married the love of his life, Marry Elizabeth Boyer on Dec. 27, 1945, and shared 56 years before her passing in 2002. Together they raised two children, Glenn E. and Carolyn Ann. Glen proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII and was stationed in Japan.
Doyle W. Davis, 54 of Tulsa died Wednesday, May 29, 2013. He was born Feb. 23, 1959, in Poteau, son of Doyle Fay and Bessie Louise (Hathcoat) Davis.
He was a 1977 graduate of Poteau High School. Doyle received his bachelor degree in criminal science from Northeastern State University, then completed the Police Academy. He served 28 years with the Tulsa Police Department including 18 with the motorcycle division. After retirement he worked for Tulsa Airport Security. He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Poteau.
