Rosella Caroline (Saline) Klutts

Ross Klutts, 87, of Poteau died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, in Fort Smith, Ark.
She was born July 1, 1925, in Oglesby, Ill., to William Derico and Maria Salina. Ross married Benny Klutts on Dec. 4, 1948, in Pryor. She was a registered nurse and served as director of nursing at Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center in Poteau. She was also a volunteer nurse for many years at the Poteau Primary and Upper Elementary schools and the Poteau Free Clinic at the Christian Church. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Poteau. 
Ross is preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband Ben.

Betty L. Wade

Betty L. Wade, 75, of Shady Point died Friday, Nov. 30, 2012, in Fort Smith, Ark.
Betty was born March 6, 1937, in Booneville, Ark., to Robert Matthew and Addie Alice (Beshears) Anderson. She was a petroleum landman — oil and gas lease. Betty was a member of the First Assembly of God in Wister. She was secretary for the Oasis International Ministries for 11 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, C.B. Wade; and sister, Liz Heavener. 

Cameron man charged with sexual assault of minor student

A Cameron man has been charged with sex crimes involving a minor following an anonymous tip.
According to jail records, Johnny Carter, 71, of Cameron, was processed into the Sebastian County Detention Center on the charge of fourth-degree sexual assault.
A warrant was issued by the Fort Smith Police Department following allegations Carter had engaged in sexual acts with a 15-year-old student from Union Christian Academy.
Carter is currently free on $10,000 bail waiting for his next court date which is yet to be set.

River Valley Cosmetology named overall winner of Poteau Christmas Parade

This years winners were named in four separate categories not including the top winner being named the Overall Chairman's Winner.
River Valley Cosmetology's Holiday Barbie float won the judges favor and was named the Overall Chairman's Winner.
In the category of organization and churches: Cub Scout pack #453 took first place followed by Girl Scout Troop #4384 in second and the Poteau Baptist Church winning third.

Accident leaves car suspended on guardrail

A Poteau woman was uninjured Saturday night after her car struck a guardrail and was left suspended until emergency crews arrived.
Pam Johnston, 57, of Poteau, told officers she was driving south on the Cavanaugh Scenic Expressway near the Walmart exit when an animal ran out in front of her car. Johnston said she swerved to miss the animal and struck the concrete barrier and slid along the guardrail. The report shows the car traveled four tenths of a mile before stopping on top of the guardrail.
Johnston wasn't injured in the accident.

New season begins for Poteau basketball girls with high hopes — and new coach; Lady Pirates end up getting first-round bye at Keys Cougars Invitational, won't play until Thursday afternoon in semifinals

Editor's note — This is the second of a two-part series previewing the Poteau High School basketball teams.
Last season, the Poteau Lady Pirates basketball team was the Cinderella story of the 2012 LeFlore County high school basketball playoffs. After ending the regular season at 5-18 last season, the Lady Pirates won three of five playoff games, won the Class 4A District Tournament, were consolation champions at the regional tournament and got to within three wins of the state tournament.

Spiro boys begin ’12-’13 season Tuesday with road basketball game against Eufaula Ironheads

The Spiro Bulldogs will begin clawing their way to basketball wins Tuesday night when they open their 2012-13 season at Eufaula for an 8 p.m. game.
The Bulldogs were 18-9 last season, and return two starters from last year — junior guard Knifeis Carter (16 points, four rebounds a game last season) and senior guard Jermaine Jimmerson (11 points, eight rebounds).
Carter is among the top 100 players to watch this high school season in the state of Oklahoma in the Vype Oklahoma Basketball Preview magazine.
