Lee Ben Foster, 81, of Poteau died Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, in Poteau. Lee was born June 2, 1931, in Poteau to Siegel E. and Reola E. (Webb) Foster. He was retired from the US Air Force.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret “Marge” of the home; daughter, Micky S. Foster of Poteau; two sons, Donald L. Foster of Wichita, Kan., Ronald G. Foster of Sapulpa; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Floyd W. Foster of Farwell, Mich.; sister-in-law, Helen Schmid of Mountain Grove, Mo.; and other relatives and loved ones. 

Clarence Lee ‘Tom’ Hudlow

Clarence Lee “Tom” Hudlow, 55, of Leflore died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, in Tulsa. Tom was born Sept. 7, 1957, in Poteau to James “Bo” and Maudie G. (Grissom) Hudlow. He was a truck driver. Tom was preceded in death by his mother, Maudie G. (Grissom) Hudlow; grandson, Tyler Hamilton; brother, Baby Hudlow; and nephews, Johnathon Hudlow.

Mary Irene Nobles of Poteau died Feb. 14, 2013, in Poteau. She was born June 22, 1930, in Booneville, Ark., to Robert and Nellie (Moore) Phillips. She was a homemaker, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and dedicated member of First Baptist Church, Poteau.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Ray Phillips, Clarence Phillips, Roy Phillips and Argie Phillips.

Calvin Phillip Hopcraft

Calvin Phillip Hopcraft, 88, of Poteau died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2103, in Fort Smith, Ark. Calvin was born Nov. 1, 1924, in Mansfield, Mass., to Walter and Gertrude (Warner) Hopcraft. He was a petroleum engineer. Calvin was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy Hopcraft; son, Barton Hopcraft; five brothers and three sisters. Calvin was very involved with the “‘sack-lunch”’ program at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Fort Smith. The program was very near and dear to his heart.

Cummings inducted to UAFS Sports Hall of Fame

Former University of Arkansas-Fort Smith (Westark College back then) player, and current Arkansas women’s assistant coach, Tari Cummings from Pocola was inducted earlier this month into the school’s Sports Hall of Fame.

Lake Wister and Talimena state parks have joined together to promote a heart healthy hiking program this year. A hike will take place each month, alternating between the two state parks.
The next hike will take place at Lake Wister State Park's Wards Landing Campground on March 9.
All hikes will begin at 1 p.m. Bottled water will be provided at each month's hike.

Buzzer-beater lifts Whitesboro past Kinta boys into title game; Bulldogs to play Red Oak Eagles for regional championship Saturday night in Wilburton

LEFLORE — In postseason play, there's nothing like a buzzer beater to give a team momentum. Just ask the Whitesboro Bulldogs.
Quintin Ludlow's 3-point basket with a second left in regulation capped a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback for the Bulldogs as they pulled out a 33-31 victory over the Kinta Eagles in the Class B Regional Tournament on Thursday night at the Leflore High School gym.

Lomega finishes strong to defeat Bokoshe girls; Lady Tigers in must-win situation for remainder of weekend

PADEN — After a strong start by the Bokoshe Lady Tigers in Thursday night's Class B Regional Tournament game, the Lomega Raiderettes finished the contest the same way — and then some.
After falling behind in the opening period, the Raiderettes stormed past the Lady Tigers over the final three quarters en route to a 95-55 victory to reach tonight's championship game against Midway at 8 p.m. at Ada High School's Cougar Activity Center.

Monroe girls make ORES State Tournament; at least one more local team will join Lady Eagles at big dance

The first team from LeFlore County to make the state tournament did so Thursday night in the 2013 Organization of Rural Elementary Schools (ORES) state playoffs.
The Monroe Lady Eagles defeated Stidham 47-29 to win the Division IV Tournament championship game Thursday night at Fanshawe.
The Lady Eagles will play the winner of the Swink/Albion consolation final contest at 7 p.m. Thursday in at Shawnee Middle School in the opening round of the state tournament.

Heat gets season sweep of Thunder with Thursday night's win in OKC

OKLAHOMA CITY — In a rematch of last year's National Basketball Association Finals, the Miami Heat visited the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday night at Chesapeake Energy Arena, already owning a win at home earlier in the season.
LeBron James set an NBA record with 30-plus points and 60-plus percent shooting over the past six games, and was looking to extend that streak.
