Carl Albert State College student Austin Christopher recently completed the George and Donna Nigh Public Service Leadership Academy. The leadership academy is in Oklahoma City and is an opportunity for outstanding students to build leadership skills and look into major issues in the state, nation, and world.
Saturday afternoon at Ival Goodman Field was about as beautiful as it could ever be, which allowed the sun to shine down on one of the college baseball coaching legends on what proved to be a big day for him.
Carl Albert Baseball Coach Mark Pollard got his 900th coaching victory in the first game of Saturday afternoon's doubleheader as his Vikings rallied to earn a 7-3 come-from-behind win over the Southwestern (Iowa) College Spartans.
In their last game, the Poteau Lady Pirates had to go eight innings to outlast the Red Oak Lady Eagles. In Friday afternoon's game, eight innings were not needed to post a win.
Briley Benson's two-run home run in the fourth inning ended the game by run rule as the Lady Pirates defeated the Panama Lady Razorbacks 12-2.
CAMERON â€” The Cameron Yellowjackets began what was a two-game set of action on Friday with a 3-1 victory over the Castleberry (Texas) Lions, who played Poteau on Thursday afternoon.
The Yellowjackets jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening inning, thanks to Cody McAlpin's two-RBI double down the left-field line.
That was all the run support Cameron starter Austin Standridge needed. Standridge struck out eight batters to get the win.
Although the Poteau Pirates baseball team plays at Town Creek Park, they may have felt as if they were playing at Wrigley Field when they entertained the Castleberry (Texas) Lions Thursday afternoon.
The Pirates hit four home runs en route to a 15-5 six-inning, run-rule victory over the Lions. Mike Didway hit his first two homers of the season, Kaydon Evans his first and Blake Roley his second.
CAMERON â€” The Cameron Lady Yellowjackets took out their frustrations in losing to Arkoma Tuesday afternoon on the Leflore Lady Savages â€” and in a big way.
The Lady â€™Jackets swept a doubleheader from the Lady Savages by scores of 17-5 and 5-1.
Heavener 10, Howe 1; Heavener 12, Panama 2; Panama 15, Howe 8: In Heavener, the Lady Wolves beat both of their guest teams.
In the win over Howe, Heavener scored two runs in the first and third innings for a 4-0 lead.
In the victory over Panama, the Lady Wolves broke a 1-1 tie with a 10-run fourth inning.
TAHLEQUAH â€” It was a sweep for the Poteau Lady Pirates golf team Thursday at the Tahlequah Invitational.
The Lady Pirates bested the field of teams to win the team championship with a score of 375.
Sophomore Hannah Ward was the top medalist in the tournament after firing a 74.
Cathleen Manlove and Addie Guthrie each carded 98s, followed by Paitton Callery with a 105 and Skylynn Terry with a 106.
The Lady Pirates will take Spring Break off, then return to action at 9 a.m. March 26 at the McAlester Invitational.
FORT SMITH, Ark. â€” Two crucial non calls by the officiating crew turned a great game into a runaway by the Southside Rebels, who knocked off the Pirates 9-2.
Southside opened the soccer doubleheader with a 7-0 shutout of the Lady Pirates.
The Poteau soccer teams will take Spring Break off, then return to action on March 27 at Costner Stadium against Fort Smith Northside. The girls' contest will begin at 5 p.m., then the boys' game at 7 p.m.

It was a rough Thursday afternoon for the Carl Albert State College softball team as it dropped a doubleheader to the Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Lady Norse.
NEO took the opener 3-0, then beat Carl Albert 5-1 in the nightcap.
Carl Albert's softball team will play today and Sunday in the Carthage (Mo.) Bash. Today, the Lady Vikings will play Iowa Western at 10 a.m. and Indian Hills Community College, Iowa, at 4 p.m.
On Sunday, Carl Albert will play Butler at 1 p.m. and Maple Woods Community College, Mo. at 3 p.m. before taking next week off for Spring Break.
Nominations are currently being accepted for the 2012 Poteau High School Sports Hall of Fame.
