LCBC's last open tournament slated Saturday at Wister

The last 2012 LeFlore County Bass Club open tournament will take place from 5:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Ward's Landing on Wister Lake. The entry fee is $40 per angler, and no dead fish.

Mark Goines, the host of “Hooked on Fishin',” will have the latest installment of his “River Rat Summer Series” from 5:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Applegate Cove on Robert S. Kerr Reservoir. The entry fee is $40 per angler.

Harris faces death penalty

An accused murderer was informed during a court appearance Wednesday that
he is facing the death penalty if convicted. Donnie Lee Harris Jr., 29, of Talihina, is accused of the first degree murder of his girlfriend, Kristi Ferguson, who was 25 at the time of her death. Harris is accused of setting Ferguson on fire after dousing her with gasoline. The couple were inside a home in Talihina when Harris set the fire, leaving several other people endangered when the home caught fire. Ferguson succumbed to her injuries in an Oklahoma City hospital. Gary W. Ford, 45, of Hartford, Ark., died Friday, July 6, 2012, in a Fort Smith hospital. He was born Sept. 17, 1966, in Fort Smith. He is preceded in death by his father, Wayne Ford. Gary was a member of a home fellowship, a member and president of the Hartford School Board, a member of the Hartford Athletic Booster Club, a lifelong volunteer in the Hartford School’s athletic program and an Eagle Scout.

Buccaneers blank Rebels at PeeWee State Tournament; Buccaneers played in winner's-bracket semifinals Wednesday night, while Rebels stave off elimination to play tonight

CUSHING — The one sure thing which was going to come out of Tuesday night's meeting between the Poteau Buccaneers and the Poteau Rebels at the OK Kids PeeWee State Tournament was that a Poteau team was going to advance to Wednesday night's winner's-bracket semifinals. That team was the Buccaneers, who blanked the Rebels 3-0.

I had my best bass fishing week ever

The fishing is heating up, along with the weather. I have actually had time to take my boat out to get after some big ol' bass.
This week was my best bass fishing week of my life, as far as size of fish caught is concerned — including my personal best of six pounds.
Saturday morning, Dan Carter and I headed to a private lake at daylight to try our luck. During the first hour, we fished with topwater poppers and caught a few small fish before heading to the deep water in the middle of the lake.
