Poteau girls suffer losses to Jenks, Yukon to end play at OU Invitational

NORMAN — The Poteau Lady Pirates softball team had a rough end to its three-day stay at the University of Oklahoma Invitational on Saturday, losing 6-1 to the Jenks Lady Trojans and 6-2 to the Yukon Millerettes.
Still, the weekend was a good one for the Lady Pirates, who went 4-2 in the three-day event.

Wister boys beat Whitesboro to win Howe Wood Bat Classic; Cameron boys third; host Lions win consolation championship

HOWE — The Wister Wildcats baseball team took home some hardware Saturday night as they defeated the Whitesboro Bulldogs 9-0 in the title game of the Howe Wood Bat Classic at Lions Field.
Wister reached the championship contest with a 1-0 victory over the Smithville Braves in championship semifinal, while Whitesboro got past the Cameron Yellowjackets 13-5 in the other semifinal.
All total, it was a good weekend for LeFlore County baseball as all four plaques from this year's event went to county teams.

Talihina softball girls win Kiowa Tournament

KIOWA — The Talihina Lady Golden Tigers softball team had a perfect weekend en route to winning the Kiowa Tournament on Saturday.
The Lady Golden Tigers blanked Wilburton 10-0 in the title game on Saturday, after beating the Lady Diggers 11-3 earlier in the day in the winner's-bracket final.
On Friday, Talihina beat Stringtown (9-0) and host Kiowa (5-0) — which features former Panama Lady Razorback Lauren Smith.

Wister girls forced to second title game by Spiro, but still win 2012 JH County Fast-Pitch Tournament

It had to go the distance, but in the end it was the Wister Junior High School softball team which brought home the latest fast-pitch county championship.
The Lady Wildcats defeated the Spiro Lady Bulldogs 3-2 in the winner-take-all title game Saturday afternoon at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex.
Spiro forced the second title game by winning the first championship game 6-5 over Wister.

Cameron girls outlast Howe in Friday softball contest

HOWE — In a Friday afternoon softball contest with early offense, the visiting Cameron Lady Yellowjackets were able to get past the Howe Lady Lions 7-5 to end the week.
Trailing 3-2 after an inning, the Lady ’Jackets scored three runs in the second inning for a 5-3 lead.
The Lady Lions cut the deficit to 5-4 after two innings, but they got no closer.
Cameron scored single runs in the third and fifth innings for a 7-4 lead, with Howe's final run coming in the fifth inning.

Heavener runner makes Top 10 at Henryetta Invitational; Wolves place seventh as a team

HENRYETTA — Heavener High School cross country runner Jose Farias placed in the Top 10 at Saturday's Henryetta Invitational. He was ninth in the boys' 5k race with a time of 18:58.
As a team, the Wolves were seventh with 211 points, finishing behind champion and meet host Henryetta (90 points), Keifer (97), Haworth (100), Quinton (130), Bristow (156) and Glenpool (191).
Besides Farias, Arturo Ortega was 28th (20:29), Cesar Gonzalez was 40th (21:50), Octavio Sanchez (22:37), James Cinocca was 56th (23:31) and Michael Bobo was 70th (25:45).

OU wins football home opener Saturday night

NORMAN — The Oklahoma Sooners home opener was a blowout as most expected. Florida A&M did keep the game close early, but the talented Sooners were just too much for the Rattlers and finished the game strong, eventually taking a 69-13 victory Saturday night at Owen Field.
It was a record-setting day for junior college transfer Damien Williams, who rushed for 156 yards and four touchdowns, including an 89-yarder in the third quarter. His rushing total was the most for a player in his first game at home, and he is only the fourth OU player to rush for 100 yards in each of his first two games.

Tulsa football team gets first win of season in rout of Tulane; However, happy victory diminished by Green Wave player's injury

TULSA — The Tulsa Golden Hurricane football team had the feeling, at least in the opionion of its coach, Bill Blankenship, that it had a chance to win the season opener Sept. 1 at Iowa State, but didn't “keep our foot down” as Blankenship described his team's play in that game.
However, Saturday's Conference USA opener against the Tulane Green Wave at Skelly Field at H.A. Chapman Stadium was different as Tulsa prevailed 45-10.

Ronald Lee Hunt

Ronald Lee Hunt, 74, of Panama died Friday, Sept. 7, 2012, in Tulsa. Ron was born May 30, 1938, in Albany, Calif., to Atlee Fulmer and Ethel Mae (Towne) Hunt. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and Marines. Ron was the security captain at AES. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Robert Hill; and daughter, Fay Daffron.

Employer seminar scheduled for next week

Kiamichi Technology Center and the Poteau Chamber of Commerce have teamed together to offer a workshop for local employers.
The seminar, “How to Recruit and Interview the Best Hourly Workers,” will be held Tuesday, Sept. 18, from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. and at the Kiamichi Technology Centers Seminar Center in Poteau. The specific content will include: ¨Strategies for attracting the hourly workers you really want and the top six interview questions ever asked.
