EDMOND â In 2012, the Spiro Bulldogs baseball team made the Class 3A State Tournament, only to suffer a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to the Verdigris Cardinals in the quarterfinals.
The same two teams met Friday afternoon in the Class 3A State Tournament semifinals at Edmond Santa Fe High School.
Unfortunately for the âDogs, the same result happened.
The Cardinals defeated the Bulldogs 10-4 to advance to today's state title game. Spiro ends the season at 27-7.
BARTLESVILLE â The Carl Albert State College baseball team split its first two games of the Region II Tournament at Doenges Ballpark.
The Vikings staved off elimination Friday afternoon with a 2-0 win over the Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa Mavericks after losing their opener 4-3 to the Western Oklahoma State College Pioneers on Thursday night.
The Vikings (23-30) did not know as of press time who their opponent would be at 3:30 this afternoon. In one scenario, the Vikings will play the loser of Fridayâs Murray State/NOC-Enid game this afternoon.
The Poteau Lady Pirates soccer team, who are going to watch their Pirate counterparts try to win the Class 4A state title tonight with a win over Oklahoma City Santa Fe South, did not make the playoffs. However, they ended the season by winning their final two matches and three of their last four to end the season at 3-10 and 2-4 in district play. For the seniors, it was a grand way to go out.
WISTER â Earlier this year, Wister baseball player Tyler Gibson signed with Seminole State College. A second Wildcat senior, Colby Turnipseed, signed to play college baseball at Carl Albert State College in a signing ceremony Tuesday morning at the Wister Gym.
âI just like to play college baseball,â Turnipseed said âItâs close to home. I really just want to go in there and do whatever they tell me to do â and play wherever. Iâm looking forward to the opportunity. Iâm very excited.â
The LeFlore County Bass Club had their sixth tournament of the 2013 circuit on Sunday at Wards Landing on Wister Lake. There were 35 boats with 62 anglers who caught 101 fish that had a total weight of 208.96 pounds. The average weight per fish was 2.07 pounds. Nine limits were caught.
Tom Neff and Paul Tankersly took first place with a stringer weighing 17 pounds even, which included Neffâs big bass weighing 5.99 pounds. The duo pocketed $770 for the win, while Neff got an additional $310 for the big bass winner.
EDMOND â Jason Hickman went 2-for-2 with a double, a run batted in and two runs scored to lead the Spiro Bulldogs to a 5-2 victory over the Salina Wildcats in the Class 3A State Tournament quarterfinals Thursday afternoon at Deer Creek High School.
Spiro (27-6) advances to play Verdigris (30-2), a 3-0 winner over Oklahoma Christian earlier Thursday, at 11 a.m. Friday in the state semifinals.
The game will be a rematch of last year's state quarterfinals, which was won by the Cardinals, ranked No. 1 in OKRankings.com, over the âDogs 1-0 at Edmond Memorial High School.
For Poteau Lady Pirates track seniors Colleen Peterson and Latifah Harris, they were hoping that they would return to state in their final season to do so. And they did.
Peterson and Harris, two of the four legs of both the 800-meter and 1,600-meter relays, will get to run at the Class 5A State Meet, which will be Friday and Saturday at Yukon High Schoolâs Miller Stadium.
The duo will be joined by Marissa Smith and Brianna Steele on the 800-meter relay, while Brittany Fox and Kandace Standridge will run with them in the 1,600-meter relay.
