If the Poteau Pirates baseball team wants to make the Class 4A State Tournament next week, it will take a three-game winning streak over the next two days.
On Day 1 of the Class 4A Regional Tournament at Town Creek Park on Wednesday, the Pirates split a pair, beating Broken Bow 15-5 Wednesday morning, but losing 5-0 to Byng that afternoon.
The Pirates (27-8) will need to win twice Thursday, and then prevail on Friday to win the regional and make state. One more loss will end their season.
FORT SMITH, Ark. â€” Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings basketball coach Jeff Tadtman announced the signing of two Fort Smith Northside Lady Bears for the 2013-14 season â€” Bria Caldwell and Kilah Cummings,Â who were both key players in the Lady Bears claiming the Class 7A state championship.
When the Poteau Pirates baseball team had Senior Night on April 16 for its three seniors, outfielder Blake Johnson, infielder/pitcher Jay Werner and utility player Ryan Johnston, they knew that they would be home for last weekâ€™s Class 4A District Tournament against Roland.
Although it was almost assured the Pirates would be home for this weekâ€™s Class 4A Regional Tournament at Town Creek Park, it became official on Monday from the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association. That made the Pirates happy campers.
We're now down to four high school baseball teams left on the diamond â€” Poteau (Class 4A), Spiro (Class 3A), Talihina (Class 2A) and Wister (Class 2A), all of which are in regional tournaments this week for the right to qualify for the Elite 8 that is otherwise known as the state tournament.
Poteau and Spiro were named regional hosts, with the Class 4A Regional Tournament for Poteau beginning today at Town Creek Park. The Class 3A Regional will begin Thursday in Spiro.
As for Class 2A regional tournaments, Talihina will be in Crowder and Wister will be in Ketchum near Grand Lake.
SEMINOLE â€” The Poteau Pirates golf team is heading back to state. The Pirates were third at Mondayâ€™s Class 4A Regional Tournament at Jimmie Austin Golf Course.
The Pirates had a first-round score of 323, then shaved eight strokes off over the second 18 holes to finish the 36-hole event with a 638.
Ada, the favorite to win state next week, had a 297-296â€”593 to win the regional title.
LUTHER â€” Two local high school track athletes won championships at the Class 2A Regional Meet, which took place Saturday.
Howeâ€™s Savannah Smallwood won the shot put (35-8) and was regional runner-up in the discus (92-1.5), while Talihinaâ€™s Keisha Brown won the long jump (14-9.25).
While Brown will be Talihinaâ€™s lone representative at the next weekendâ€™s state meet at Midwest City Carl Albert High Schoolâ€™s Titan Stadium, the Lady Lions will have several state qualifiers performing at state.
STROUD â€” Spiroâ€™s Philicea Mack, who was the lone Lady Bulldog participant at Saturdayâ€™s Class 3A Regional Meet, qualified for next weekendâ€™s state meet at Ardmore High Schoolâ€™s Noble Stadium by winning the regional title in the shot put with a distance of 35-10.5.

Two Lady Wolves won regional titles to automatically qualify for next weekendâ€™s state meet at Ardmore High Schoolâ€™s Noble Stadium.
Jodie Hill won two regional titles â€” the 100-meter (12.65 seconds) and the 200-meter dash (26.61). She was also regional runner-up in the 100-meter hurdles (16.6).
Laura Jo Allen was regional champion in the discus (115-2) to automatically punch her ticket to state.

Contrary to the individual who does the announcing for the Poteau High School soccer home games, the name of our stadium is Elbert Costner Stadium not Peter Conser Stadium.

Class 4Aâ€™s top-ranked Poteau Pirates soccer team will face the Verdigris Cardinals in the opening round of the state playoffs at 6 tonight at Costner Stadium, with the winner meeting the Stilwell-Oologah winner on Friday night.
Last spring was a magical one for the Poteau Lady Pirates golf team as it won the Class 4A State Tournament and Hannah Ward won the individual state championship.
â€śIt really sunk in about the time it happened,â€ť said Poteau senior golfer Cathleen Manlove. â€śIt was just exciting and overwhelming. It was one of those experiences that you never forget.â€ť
Ever since last spring, Manlove has tried to make herself even better than she was a season ago.
