Joe David Jefferson, 72, od Red Oak died Monday, Oct. 1, 2012, in Tulsa. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at Dowden Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Hontubby Cemetery.

David Lynn Hubbard, 56, of Fort Smith, Ark., died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012, in Fort Smith. Services will be held at noon Monday, Oct. 15, at Dowden Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Hodgen Cemetery.

Belinda M. Wilsie, 58, of Spiro died Monday, Oct. 8, 2012, in Fort Smith, Ark. Belinda was born Feb. 10, 1954, in Poteau to Jess James and Joella Irene (Pierce) Wilsie. She was a case worker for the Oklahoma Child Welfare System. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Teddy Wayne Solomon; brothers, Robert Tucker and Jullius Ray Wilsie; sisters, Lillie Ford, Marna Dean Ham, Darlene Bearden, twin sisters at birth, Ollie Cordelia Wilsie and Cordelia Ollie Wilsie.

James Walter Atkinson

James Walter Atkinson, 57, of Howe died Aug. 31, 2012, in Howe.  He was born July 1, 1956, at Brea, Calif., to Johnie and Opal (Shepherd) Atkinson. He was a rig runner in the oilfield.
James was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Diane Atkinson of Howe; two sons, Jason Atkinson of Howe and Todd Atkinson of College Station, Texas; five grandchildren, Crystal Atkinson, James Atkinson, Shania Atkinson, Leif Atkinson, Seanna Atkinson; and many friends, family and loved ones.

Barbara Louise Nichols, 67, of Heavener died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, in Heavener. Barbara was born March 29, 1945, in Wister to John and Pearl House. She was a homemaker. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; two great-grandchildren, Ethan Meek and Elizabeth Self; sister, Faye Stump; brothers, J.T. House, Nobe House, L.D. House; son-in-law, Doug Spears. Barbara loved life, family shopping and holiday get-togethers. She was very stylish. She was a great cook and many restaurants called her often wanting her to work for them.

Attempted kidnapping report a hoax, police say

Poteau police called off a manhunt for a would-be kidnapper Thursday after the alleged victim admitted lying about the incident.
Poteau Chief of Police Stephen Fruen said he wanted the public to be aware of the hoax and feel safe on city streets.

Senior running back anxious to see Poteau football team bounce back with upset of Tulsa Cascia Hall

The Poteau Pirates football team put a lot into last week's homecoming game with the Fort Gibson Tigers. After going toe to toe with them, the Pirates ended up falling 49-21. Poteau senior running back Michael Reynolds said it was a somber mood in the locker room after the game.
“It was sad,” Reynolds said. “We know we can't let it get the better of us. We have to get ready to go this week.”

PKMS football teams split road games at Broken Bow

BROKEN BOW — The Pansy Kidd Middle School football teams split their final road games of the season Tuesday at Memorial Stadium against the homestanding Broken Bow Savages.
The seventh-grade Raiders posted a 42-28 win over the Savages, who took the eighth-grade contest by a score of 28-13.
The PKMS teams will return to action in their season finales at 5 p.m. Tuesday against McAlester at Costner Stadium. The seventh-grade game will lead things off, followed by the eighth-grade game and the freshmen game at approximately 7 p.m.

Panama girl becomes youngest ever to take Oklahoma bear

The young hunter that takes the cake this hunting season is Lani Monks, an 11-year-old young lady from Panama. Lani is the daughter of Jeff and Kim Monks. She was hunting with her dad, who has taken her hunting since she was age 4.
Lani took her first deer two years ago, and took two deer last year, from the ground without a ground blind. Anyone who has bow hunted knows how tough that is.
