Arkansas teen flying to college orientation survives crash

JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) — An Arkansas father and son who decided to fly to orientation at Oklahoma State University have survived a crash landing in a parking lot.

Forty-year-old Kenneth Caubble of Jonesboro was flying the 1973 Piper Arrow aircraft Wednesday morning when the engine trouble began at 2,000 feet. He landed the plane in a Jonesboro strip center before its wing hit a parking sign and tore off. The plane then hit a second pole and flipped before the aircraft caught fire.

Both Caubble and his son were able to walk away uninjured.

Special meeting tonight over Poteau utility increases, budget

The Poteau Public Works Authority will hold a special meeting at 5:15 p.m. at the Poteau City Hall to discuss and approve the 2015-2016 budget and a utility rate increase for water, sewer and trash.

The meeting is at city hall located on 111 Peters St., Poteau.

Poteau duo in All-State soccer match tonight

Two Poteau High School soccer playing graduates, midfielder/forward David Lanuza and midfielder Carlos Panduro, are scheduled to play in tonight’s All-State Boys Soccer Match at 8 p.m. in Noble.
Three other Poteau soccer graduating seniors, Lady Pirate goalkeeper Taryn Shelton, Pirate goalie Jayson Davis and defenseman Davis Kuck, are alternates, but as of press time none of the three were going to have openings to play in tonight’s matches. If Shelton gets to play, her match will be at 6 tonight in Noble before the boys’ match.

Former Heavener Wolf, OSU pitcher drafted by Washington Nationals

Baseball is called “The National Pastime,” and there’s a chance former Heavener Wolf and current Oklahoma State pitcher Koda Glover will do that “National”-ly speaking.
The Washington Nationals drafted Glover in the eighth round of the Major League Baseball Draft on Tuesday.

Spiro, Red Oak girls reach winner’s-bracket finals of 2015 Panama Summer Tournament; championship, if-game set Thursday night

The Spiro Lady Bulldogs and the Red Oak Lady Eagles each find themselves a win away from playing for tonight’s championship of the 2015 Panama Summer Softball Tournament.
The Lady Bulldogs beat Alma, Ark., while the Lady Eagles defeated the Poteau Lady Pirates as they tied the game in the sixth and won the game in the seventh.
Spiro and Red Oak will play at 5:10 p.m. Thursday in the winner’s-bracket final, with the winner getting to play for the championship at 7:50 p.m. The if-game is slated for 9 p.m. if necessary.

BREAKING NEWS: One trapped in semi rollover on Oklahoma 112

June 10 at 2:10 p.m. — Poteau Police, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Emergency Medical Services and Fire and Rescue are headed to Oklahoma Highway 112 between Poteau and Cameron for a semi-trailer that has rolled over and one person is trapped.
Expect travel delays.

Poteau Fire Department battles house fire

June 10 at 1:30 p.m. — Poteau Fire Department is battling a house fire on the corner of Wilburn and Hill Streets in Poteau.
The house is fully engulfed according to PDN Reported Amanda Corbin who is on scene.

Four local softball teams make winner's-bracket quarterfinals at Panama Summer Tournament

Four local softball teams made it to Tuesday's winner's-bracket quarterfinals at the Panama Summer Tournament.
Tournament-host Panama beat Keota in the final game of the day Monday night, while Poteau defeated Ozark, Spiro beat Whitesboro and Red Oak got a bye into the quarterfinals.
The title game is set for 7:50 p.m. Thursday, with the if-game at 9 p.m.

Talihina has new hoop coaches; Caldwell replaces Dickson, who went to Oktaha; Morris new girls coach

When watching this month's LeFlore County Summer Basketball League games, fans will notice changes with the Talihina teams as each got new coaches — who both just happened to come from Leflore Public Schools.
Leflore basketball and girls softball coach Daniel Caldwell will take over the Golden Tigers from coach Darian Dickson, who left to take the coaching job with the Oktaha Tigers.
Caldwell's Leflore girls assistant coach and Savage baseball coach David Morris also headed south with him as Morris will be the new Lady Golden Tigers coach, replacing Cyndi James.
