Gale Edward Enger

Gale Edward Enger, 89, of Poteau died Wednesday, Feb. 18, in Poteau. Gale was born March 3, 1925, in Kindred, N.D., to William and Effie (Mestad) Enger.

He worked as superintendent of sanitation for 24 years. He also was a licensed pilot and taught flying lessons. He was a member of Springhill Baptist Church.

Gale was preceded in death by his parents; son, Larry Enger; one brother and one sister.

Jack O. Davis Sr. of Poteau was born Feb. 19, 1933, in Heavener to Acely Owen and Deborah (Sommerville) Davis and departed Feb. 15, 2015, in Poteau at the age of 81.

Cattleya Nikita Merie Costigan, 5 months and 9 days, of Hartford, Ark., died Friday, Feb. 13, 2015, in Fort Smith, Ark. She was born Sept. 4, 2014, in Fort Smith to Andrew Costigan and Victoria Merie Liddell. 

Cattleya is survived by her parents; brother, Shane Andrew Costigan of Alma, Ark.; sister, Debra Sue Costigan of Fort Smith; grandmothers, Dawn Hickerson of Hartford, and Rosalee Oliver of Fort Smith; grandfathers, Eugene Hartman of New York and Dennis Ollar of Heavener; as well as a host of other family members and loved ones.  

Bill targets drivers who smoke in car with children

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Drivers in Oklahoma who smoke with children in the vehicle could be fined up to $100 under a bill that has passed a legislative committee.

The Senate Public Safety voted 7-1 on Thursday for the bill by Senate Democratic Leader Randy Bass of Lawton.

The bill would make it a secondary offense, meaning a driver would have to be pulled over for another traffic violation. Coalgate Republican Sen. Josh Brecheen voted against the bill, voicing concern it allows too much government intrusion.

Poteau basketball seniors ready for final postseason; Lady Pirates, Pirates play Friday night at Muldrow in Class 4A District Tournament

The Class 4A playoffs will begin Friday night for the Poteau High School basketball teams. The seniors are ready.
“I’m excited that we’ve made it to this point,” said senior Tabitha Waldrop, whose Lady Pirates will face the homestanding Muldrow Lady Bulldogs at 6:30 p.m. “I’m not going to play basketball in college, but I can’t wait to see what we can do in the playoffs — and I can’t wait to see what the girls are going to do next year.”

A little more than a year ago, Howe basketball player LuAnn Davis went through some of the most adversity any human being could. During her senior season, she kept collapsing on the court — including during the 82nd LeFlore County Tournament.
Davis ended up having open-heart surgery to repair the problem, which if it not had been surgically corrected possibly could have claimed her life.

The second annual Hungry Like the Wolf 5k/10k fun run/walk and two-mile walk will take place beginning at noon Saturday at Blues Park in Heavener. Race-day registration and packet pick-up will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Packets may also be picked up from 3 to 4 p.m. Friday at Heavener High School.
The entry fee is $25 per runner.
All proceeds will benefit the Heavener High School track and cross country programs. The course will begin at Blues Park and end at Daylight Donuts at 710 North Highway 59.

Poteau senior heavyweight hopes to make state in his final opportunity; Pirates will be in regional tournament this weekend at Catoosa

All it takes it one chance. However, for Poteau senior heavyweight Hank Galetka, this will be his last chance to make the Class 4A State Tournament.
“It would mean the world to me,” said Galetka, who along with his Pirates teammates will try to seek a state berth at the Class 4A Regional Tournament on Friday and Saturday in Catoosa. “Wrestling all the time and not going for state, but finally getting to go my senior year, would make it mean a lot more to me. I'm looking forward to this weekend.”
To make state, wrestlers will have to finish in the top four in their respective weight classes.
