Wister boys win Class A District Tournament title

PRESTON — The Wister Wildcats baseball team is trying to make it to state for the sixth straight season, dating back to the spring 2010 season. The Wildcats have taken the first step toward that goal.
The ‘Cats defeated the Preston Pirates 9-1 to win the Class A District Tournament Friday afternon.
The Wildcats totally dominated things on Day 1 as they routed both the host Pirates 16-3 after doing likewise to the Wilson (Henryetta) Tigers 20-0 on Thursday.
The Wildcats (18-7) will find out Monday where, when and who they will play in the Class A Regional Tournament next week.

Oktaha ends Cameron boys' fall 2012 baseball season

OKTAHA — The Cameron Yellowjackets baseball team saw its fall 2012 season come to an end Friday afternoon as they lost 9-5 to the host Oktaha Tigers in the Class A District Tournament.
The Yellowjackets split their first two games in the tournament on Thursday, blanking Okay 11-0 before losing a heartbreaking, 10-inning game 6-5 to host Oktaha.

Leflore boys reach Class B District Tournament, but lose to Stuart to end their fall campaign

STUART — The good news was the Leflore Savages baseball team made it to the title game of the Class B District Tournament. The bad news they were stung by the Stuart Hornets 13-3 to see their season end.
The Savages got to the title game by run ruling the Panola Bearcats 12-2 in six innings.
The Savages split their first two games of the district tournament on Thursday, beating Panola 9-4 before losing to host Stuart 10-4.

Howe boys see fall baseball season end

SMITHVILLE — The 2012 fall baseball season came to an end for the Howe Lions Thursday afternoon in the Class A District Tournament. The Lions suffered a 10-0 loss to the host Smithville Braves, then fell 6-2 to the Haworth Lions.

Poteau cross country boys make history by winning first-ever meet

INOLA — It was an historic day in Poteau High School cross country as the Pirates won their first-ever meet as they won the Inola Invitational Thursday afternoon.
The Pirates, who scored 43 points, edged out Kansas, who scored 48 points — as the lowest score wins cross country meet, with points compiled by adding the numbers of the places finished by individual runners.

IvaJo Shykes

IvaJo Shykes, 71, of Eufaula died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012. She was born on Sept. 25, 1940, in Heavener. IvaJo loved her family, her children, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchild very much. IvaJo was preceded in death by her parents, Lula and Jodie Allison; and her grandson, Christopher Keith Shykes.

Funeral services for David Eric Wald, formerly of Poteau, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, 2012, at First Christian Church in Lamont with burial in Pond Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Wilson Funeral Home, Pond Creek.

Poteau opens District 4A-4 play by entertaining archrival Sallisaw tonight; Pirate fans asked to help 'red out' Black Diamonds

When anyone enters the Poteau Pirates football team's locker room, on the wall are several team goals. No. 8 — Beat Sallisaw. No. 9 — Go undefeated at home. If the Pirates achieve goal No. 9 tonight at Costner Stadium, it means the Pirates also achieved goal No. 8.
The Pirates (3-0) will welcome the archrival Black Diamonds (2-1) to town to open District 4A-4 play at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Costner Stadium.
“It's nice to be home,” said Greg Werner, Poteau's new coach. “It's going to be special because this will probably be the largest crowd these players are going to play in front of.”
