Can you believe summer is over? For our fast-pitch softball and fall baseball players and coaches as well as yours truly, summer ends today as those two sports will begin today.
Listed at the bottom of this column is the schedule from today's games in both sports through next Monday's games.
For those of you new to the area, this column appears every Tuesday morning's edition. The column will talk about upcoming events, the ins and outs and ups and downs of the world of LeFlore County fast-pitch softball and fall baseball.

A Heavener man is listed in critical condition after his home on West Ave. D. exploded Sunday night.

Wister police in pursuit with horse drawn wagon

Officer Jordan Westbrook may have spent one of his strangest nights on duty in Wister Saturday night when he notified dispatch he was attempting to stop a man who was driving a wagon down the road.
Westbrook claims the reason for stopping the man was his failure to have headlights or any lighting devices mounted on the wagon during late night hours.

Football practice begins Tuesday; Heat a big factor, maybe more so than ever, as football practice commences next week

For the last several weeks, the heatwave has made its presence known in LeFlore County, and there doesn't seem to be any relief in sight. That doesn't bode well for high school football players, who will begin practice on Tuesday for upcoming season.

For those individuals who play or coach high school football, Tuesday, Aug. 7 has been etched in stone in just about everywhere possible — from bulletin boards to consciously in the mind.
The 2012 season will get off the ground on Tuesday as high school football teams will be able to begin practicing for the upcoming season.

As high school football players prepare for their first week of practice, which will begin Tuesday, the basic things which will be worked on is, well — the basics.
“I think the first day or two, we're going to review everything we did in the spring and our camp,” said new Poteau Coach Greg Werner, whose Pirates will have two practices on Tuesday — one at 6:30 a.m. and the other at 2:30 p.m. “We're going to try to polish all that up. Around Thursday and Friday, we'll begin to add more stuff. We'll have a lot to put in and things to do.”

Church League winning teams crowned for 2012

The 2012 Choctaw Country Club Church League came to a close on Monday night. The 16-team league ran eight weeks for the local church teams.
For the fourth straight year, the Heavener First Baptist Church team of Brock Hardin, Bobby Pickle and John Summers won the first flight title with a score of 16-under, followed by First Christian Church-Manlove at -12.
In the second flight, the Southside Baptist-Mode team of Paul Mode, Monty Thompson and Billy Newby came in as the best with a score of even, with the Southside Baptist-Peters team being runner-up (+2).

Carl Albert State College Assistant Softball Coach Megan Young will give softball lessons at $25 per hour to girls up through age 18.

Darla Renee Trammell

Darla Renee Trammell, 41, of Lewisville, Texas, formerly of Heavener, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012, in Lewisville. Darla was born May 1, 1971 in Dumas, Texas, to Joe and Janice (Kiefer) Trammell.  She was an accountant. She was a graduate of Carl Albert State College in Poteau and Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford. Darla was preceded in death by her grandparents, James and Ada Trammell, Loten and Sarah Kiefer; cousins, Noah Laurent, Mandy and Robyn Simmons, Traci Trammell-Hudson.
