ALTUS â It was a rough Saturday afternoon for the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings softball team, which dropped a road doubleheader against Western Oklahoma State College.
The Lady Pioneers got an 8-0 run-ruled victory in five innings in the opener, then rallied late to take a 3-2 eight-inning victory in the nightcap.
The Lady Vikings will return to action this afternoon in a road doubleheader against Rose State College in Midwest City. Action is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
WILBURTON â It's hard not to think about deja vu right now if you happen to be the Talihina Golden Tigers basketball team.
Two years ago, the Golden Tigers beat the Preston Pirates to win the Class 2A Area Tournament at the McAlester Expo Center en route to making state for the fourth straight year and eventually capturing the gold ball â by beating Preston again.
One of the players on that team had the last name of Lockhart â with the first name of Taggart, who is now playing at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock.
HARTSHORNE â Heavener High School's powerlifting team competed Saturday at the Class 3A Regional Meet.
The team was named regional champions and will compete in the Class 3A State Meet, which will take place Friday in McLoud.
The Poteau Pirates soccer team came in second at the Sykes Invitational, which took place Saturday in three different locations in Arkansas â Van Buren, Fort Smith Northside High School and Greenwood.
The Pirates beat Van Buren 4-0, lost 2-0 to Northside and routed Mena, Ark., 10-0.
The news was not as good for the Lady Pirates, who lost all three of their games on the day. Poteau lost 3-0 to Van Buren, 2-1 to Northside and 3-0 to Mena.
Benjamin Lawrence Montoya, 92, of Poteau died Sunday, March 3, 2013 in Poteau. Ben was born Feb. 6, 1921 in Colorado Springs, Colo., the seventh son of Thomas Daniel and Mary Louisa (Gutierrez) Montoya. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers. As an infant Ben moved to Ventura, Calif., where he attended grade school, high school and college. During WWII he worked in the CCC and in an airplane factory in Los Angeles. There he met and married Wilma Gardenia Sparks in 1945. To this marriage was born two children, Mary Amelia and Benjamin Lawrence Jr.
Bonnie Sparks, 82, of Talihina died Saturday, March 2, 2013, in McAlester.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, at Damon Cemetery under the direction of Talihina Funeral Home.
Ida Marie Reed, 76, of Poteau died Friday, March 1, 2013, in Spiro.Â Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 5, at Evans Chapel of Memories in Poteau. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Poteau, under the direction of Evans and Miller Funeral Home.
Carl Leroy Murry, 57, of Spiro died Saturday, March 2, 2013, in Fort Smith, Ark. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Tuskahoma Cemetery under the direction of Evans and Miller Funeral Home, Poteau.
Virgil E. âBillâ Cody, 71, of Bokoshe passed away Saturday, March 2, 2013, in Bokoshe.
Shirley Anderson Autry, 74, of Spiro died Friday, March 1, 2013, in Fort Smith, Ark.
Shirley was born March 22, 1938, in Poker Bend to Harve and Rose (Shoup) Anderson. She was a homemaker. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Emma Lawrence.
