For quite some time, Sept. 21, 2012, is a date which Poteau Pirate football players, coaches and fans have had etched in stone. Not only is it the District 4A-4 opener, but it is against archrival Sallisaw at 7:30 p.m. Friday night. One such individual is senior center/defensive lineman Logan Hildebrand.
âWe're just ready to play,â he said. âWe've been ready since summer. We believe that it's our time.â
PANAMA â Archrivals met Tuesday night to decide who would win the 2012 Class 2A Fast-Pitch Softball District Tournament when the defending state champion Panama Lady Razorbacks entertained the Pocola Lady Indians. In the end, it was the defending champs who prevailed as Panama swept Pocola by identical scores of 5-1.
The Lady âBacks will find out early next week who they will play, where and when in the Class 2A Regional Tournament. The defeats ended Pocola's season.
WISTER â It looked like there was going to be a winner-take-all game Wednesday afternoon in the Class 2A District Tournament. After the homestanding Wister Lady Wildcats handled the Talihina Lady Golden Tigers 8-2 in Tuesday's opening game, Talihina jumped out to a lead in the nightcap, which looked somewhat of a safe lead.
ARKOMA â The Cameron Lady Yellowjackets softball team finds itself this morning just a win away from another week of the season. The Lady âJackets posted wins over Gans (20-2) and host Arkoma (7-3) Tuesday at the Class A District Tournament.
The Lady Grizzlies were the first team to be eliminated as they suffered an 11-3 loss to the Lady Mustangs before losing to the Lady Yellowjackets.
The Lady âJackets and the Lady Mustangs will battle at 2 p.m. this afternoon in the title game of the district tournament. If Arkoma prevails, there will be a winner-take-all game right afterward at 3:30 p.m.
HEAVENER â The Poteau Lady Pirates softball team continued its winning ways Tuesday afternoon with a 12-2 win over the Heavener Wolves.
Keota 5, Pocola 3: Monday in Pocola, the Lady Indians jumped out to a 2-0 lead after an inning, but the Lady Lions scored three runs in the third for a 3-2 lead.
After Pocola tied the game at 3-all in the fifth inning, Keota regained the lead with a two-run seventh inning.
If ever the Heavener Wolves football team needed a big win, it was last week. In their home opener Sept. 7 at Harvey Stadium, the Wolves shot themselves in the foot and ended up losing 28-21 to the Hartshorne Miners.
The Wolves came back last week at home with a strong second half to down the Gore Pirates 31-21 at Harvey Stadium to celebrate homecoming.
Chris Bunch, Spiro's football coach, said back in the preseason in August that he hoped that his Bulldogs and the Stigler Panthers, who are the favorite to win District 3A-8, would meet later in the season â instead of the district opener as they will at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Stigler.
The Panthers (2-1) have won two straight games â beating Hartshorne 39-6 after winning 33-2 over Okmulgee the week before. Stigler opened the season with a 26-21 loss to Hilldale.
KINTA â The 2012 fall baseball regular season ended on a high note for the Leflore Savages as they routed the Kinta Eagles 11-1 Monday afternoon in their tune-up game for the Class B District Tournament, which will be today and Friday in Stuart.
