WISTER — The Wister Lady Wildcats ended their week Friday afternoon with a Green Valley Conference doubleheader sweep of the Cameron Lady Yellowjackets by scores of 16-8 and 9-0.
Westville 10, Heavener 3: In Heavener, trailing 1-0 after an inning, the Lady Yellowjackets scored twice in the second inning and twice more in the third inning for a 4-1 lead. Then, they put the game away with a two-run sixth inning and a four-run seventh.
Buffalo Valley 11, Howe 1: In Howe, the Lady Buffaloes jumped out to a 3-0 lead after an inning, which ballooned to 8-0 in the second inning.
HEAVENER — One of the biggest things Rick Lang, Pocola High School's football coach, wanted to change from what happened to his Indians near the end of the season was finishing games. Lang believed that didn't happen in three of his team's final four games. Unfortunately for Lang and the Indians, it happened again Friday night at Harvey Stadium.
Heavener's Blake Smittle scored on about an 18-yard touchdown run with 38 seconds left in the second 12-minute period as the Wolves rallied to down the Indians 28-24 in the final preseason scrimmage for both teams.
ARKOMA — The Arkoma Mustangs entertained the Gans Grizzlies in a preseason scrimmage Friday night at Mustang Field for the final tune-up for the 2012 football season.
In Gans' first series of 10 plays for both teams, Arkoma senior Matthew Shafer recovered a fumble on the Grizzlies eighth play. He also tallied 23 yards rushing in just four attempts for the Mustangs.
PANAMA — The Panama Razorbacks had a triangular football scrimmage against the Canadian Cougars and the Sallisaw-Central Tigers Friday night at George Ollie Stadium. Only two touchdowns were scored in the entire scrimmage.
STILWELL — In the eyes of Chris Bunch, Spiro High School's veteran football coach, his Bulldogs made improvement in Friday night's scrimmage against the Stilwell Indians from their first scrimmage the week before at Tulsa Webster along with Okmulgee.
“I think we improved from last week at Tulsa Webster,” Bunch said. “We looked a lot better, but we still have a ways to go — but we did improve.”
VIAN — The Talihina Golden Tigers traveled to Vian for their final preseason football scrimmage of the season, and came away one positive. They don't have to play the Wolverines in the district anymore.
The Wolverines returned a senior-dominated team of 40 players from last year's team which lost to eventual Class 2A state champion Hennessey in the state quarterfinals. Five of those seniors are being looked at by Division I colleges, and the Wolverines have a talented group of juniors and sophomores to go with them.
