Tuesday's High School Baseball Roundup

September 13, 2012

WISTER — To begin this fall's season, the Cameron Yellowjackets defeated the Wister Wildcats. Not only did the ‘Cats avenge that loss, they put another defeat on the ’Jackets.
Wister swept a Green Valley Conference doubleheader from Cameron Tuesday by scores of 10-0 and 9-3.
Leflore 11, Battiest 2: In Battiest, the Savages jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Garrett Singleterry's two-run home run, his fifth of the season, en route to a 7-1 lead by the end of the second frame.

Poteau, Panama girls reach winner's-bracket final at LCT; 2012 fast-pitch champion will be crowned by end of the night

September 13, 2012

The LeFlore County Tournament, no matter what sport, can bring both joy and heartache. On Day 2 of the 2012 LeFlore County Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament Tuesday at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex, there was definitely some of both.
For instance, the Talihina Lady Golden Tigers were within a hit of knocking off the top seed, the Poteau Lady Pirates, in one of the winner's-bracket semifinals. Instead, that hit did not come, and an extra inning was needed — since the game went past its alloted time limit.

Senior receiver/defensive back glad to be finally be playing at home

September 13, 2012

The last time the Poteau Pirates football team was home, it was its final preseason scrimmage against Mena, Ark., Aug. 23 at Costner Stadium.
Now, the Pirates will finally get to play a meaningful game at their friendly confines at 7:30 p.m. Friday as they play their home opener against Tulsa Webster. No one is more glad of that than senior receiver and defensive back Tyler Tustin.
“It feels great getting to play in front of our home crowd,” Tustin said. “After having two away games, maybe we can have a good showing in front of our home fans — and come away with another win.”

September 13, 2012

After a disappointing end to the 2011 football season, the beginning to the 2012 season has been anything but for the Talihina Golden Tigers.
The Golden Tigers (2-0) have pitched two shutouts, 27-0 over Wilburton in the season opener and 41-0 over Antlers in last week's home opener at Doc Robinson Stadium.
“After these two games, we've only given up five first downs and the kids are showing good technique on defense,” said Kelly Gravitt, Talihina's coach. “We're executing on offense.”

Deer season is almost here

September 13, 2012

Now that I have the important stuff out of the way, it is time to talk bow hunting. There are many men (and women) who are anxiously awaiting the opening of archery season.
My neighbor, Dan Carter, and his son, Danny, are getting ready for opening day. My boys and I have been shooting our bows and hanging stands with them for the last couple of weeks. Danny is getting a new bow, and I am going to do my best to get him a shot at a deer with it this year.
