CASC softball team splits with 15th-ranked Western

ALTUS — It may have seemed like a long, six-hour bus trip going out for Wednesday afternoon's make-up road doubleheader against 15th-ranked Western Oklahoma State College for the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings. However, the trip home probably didn't seem that way.
The Lady Vikings, who were run ruled 13-2 in six innings in the opener, knocked off the nationally-ranked Lady Pioneers 8-7 in nine innings in the nightcap.

Chitwood, Parker claim title on Lake Tenkiller

The LeFlore County Bass Club had its third tournament of the 2012 circuit Saturday at Chicken Creek on Lake Tenkiller. There were 28 boats with 54 anglers who caught a total of 94 bass weighing a collective totalof 223.5 pounds. The average bass weighed 2.38 pounds, and 13 limits were caught.
The winning team was Joey Chitwood and Tony Parker, who caught 16.75 pounds of fish to earn $675. Among the fish was Chitwood's big bass, weighing 3.87 pounds to earn an additional $270.

Wilkie Ellis Frazier, 71, of Talihina died Monday, April 15, 2012, in Ada. Services will be held Friday, April 20, at St. Paul Methodist Church, Talihina, 2 p.m. with Raymond Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the New Talihina Cemetery under the direction of Talihina Funeral Home.

Lenora A. Morsund, 78, of Poteau died Wednesday, April 18, 2012, in Heavener. 
Lenora was born Aug. 20, 1933, in Cameron to J.H. and Gussie (Sharp) Higginbotham. She was a homemaker. Lenora was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, John Morsund. She worked in the craft and fabric department at Walmart for more than 20 years. She loved her family very much and her church family. She loved to read her Bible, finding strength from the scriptures. She loved nature and seeing the flowers bloom.

PDN welcomes new publisher to staff

This week the Poteau Daily News family welcomed its newest member to our office.
Robert Shearon has been named to the publisher's position at PDN and began undertaking his duties this week.
"I'm very excited about the opportunity to be the publisher of the Poteau Daily News," Shearon said. "Poteau seems to be a really progressive community with a lot of great things going on."

Heavener soccer teams sweep county games from Poteau Tuesday night

HEAVENER — It ended up being a Heavener sweep of Poteau Tuesday at Harvey Stadium on the soccer fields. The Wolves got past the Pirates 3-2 in double overtime to seize control of the district, while the Lady Wolves blanked the Lady Pirates 2-0 in the opener.

The Poteau Lady Pirates won their home softball finale Tuesday afternoon by run ruling the Sallisaw Lady Black Diamonds 14-4 in four innings.

HEAVENER — The Heavener Lady Wolves ended the regular season with a come-from-behind 9-3 win over the Wister Lady Wildcats Tuesday afternoon.
Down 2-1 after an inning, the Lady Wolves scored twice in the second inning to take a 3-2 lead.
After the Lady Wildcats tied the game at 3-3 in the third inning, the Lady Wolves erupted for four runs in the third inning and then got two more runs in the fifth.

WISTER — A fast start enabled the Wister Wildcats to down the Heavener Wolves by a score of 12-4 Tuesday afternoon.
A two-run first inning, highlighted by the first of two home runs by Colby Turnipseed, a two-run shot, put the Wildcats, who are playing at 4:30 p.m. this afternoon at Broken Bow, a 2-0 lead.
A four-run second inning, highlighted by Turnipseed's second homer of the game and season, a three-run shot, put the ’Cats ahead 6-0.
