Election workers disheartened

April 4, 2012

Low voter turn out for Tuesday's Special Election in Poteau for Proposition 4 resulted in a number of poll workers being forced to work at poll locations all day without a single voter coming in to cast their ballot. Poteau polling places at precincts 212, 109, 211 and 103 all reported no ballots cast during the election. Three poll workers were still paid at each location for what amounts to at least a 14 hour day as polls open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. and workers are usually busy for about an hour before and an hour after.

Not a complete county tournament this spring

April 4, 2012

When one looks at the 2012 LeFlore County Baseball Tournament bracket, one of the biggest things which is noticed is that there are only 11 teams in the field and not the customary 13.
The reason is quite simple.
This year's tournament host was Arkoma, but due to lack of facilities and staff members to staff two sites for the first two days, it had to give up on the chance to be the host school.

Last fall, the Fort Gibson Lady Tigers won the Class 4A Regional Tournament over the Poteau Lady Pirates on Poteau's home field to keep the Lady Pirates from making state.
Albeit in slow-pitch softball, the Lady Pirates avenged that loss — and in a big way — as they swept a doubleheader from the Lady Tigers by scores of 11-4 and 9-0 on Monday afternoon.
In the opener, the Lady Pirates trailed 3-2 in the second inning, but scored twice in the second inning and three runs in the third inning for a 7-3 lead after three innings.
