Lady Pirates on way to sweep of state golf titles; Poteau girls, sophomore golfer lead after opening round

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Poteau Lady Pirates golf team is halfway to a sweep of the Class 4A State Tournament championships.
The Lady Pirates have the first-round lead at state after shooting a team score of 356 this afternoon at Lake Hefner South Golf Course.
Poteau is 12 team shots over the team which beat it at last week's regional, Hilldale (368). Anadarko is a distant third at 372.
Individually, sophomore Hannah Ward is leading the way with a 76, which is five shots better than any other golfer.

Randy Mangram, 52, of Talihina died Sunday, April 28, 2012, in Talihina.
Services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 2, at the Talihina Nazarene Church with Brent Smith officiating. Burial will be in New Talihina Cemetery under the direction of Talihina Funeral Home.

First I would like to thank the citizens of LeFlore County for the opportunity of serving as your Sheriff for the last four years. It has been both an honor, and a privilege that you placed your confidence in me to allow me to serve you. I am formally announcing my candidacy to serve as your Sheriff for another term. My wife Francine Curnutt, who is a career educator of 26 years at the Wister Public School system, along with my two daughters Callie and Andrianna, and myself live in the Wister community.

Heavener girls fall to Blanchard in Class 5A state quarterfinals

OKLAHOMA CITY — With a powerful wind gusting out to left field, it was no surprise that there were a number of home runs hit in the opening game of the Class 5A State Softball Tournament at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium Tuesday afternoon. The Blanchard Lady Lions hit six out of the park as they run-ruled the Heavener Lady Wolves 26-13.
The first three batters of the game (Liz Broyles, Leslie Miller and Ashley Trent) homered for the Lady Lions, and they went on to score 11 runs in the first inning.

Lady Pirate golf senior preparing for final state tournament, athletic event

Eventually, chapters in one's life will end. Poteau Lady Pirate senior golfer Addie Guthrie is in her final pages of such a chapter.
Guthrie will conclude her Poteau High School athletic career today and Thursday at the Class 4A State Tournament.
“It's sad,” Guthrie said Tuesday morning before the Lady Pirates left to play a practice round that afternoon to get ready for the 36-hole, two-day state tournament. “When it's over, it's going to be over. I'm looking forward to it. I'm ready, but I'm also sad. It's going to be bittersweet. Hopefully, we can go out with a bang — and get a ring.”

Poteau Pirate golfers regional runners-up, state bound; Poteau freshman tied for third-place medalist in event hampered by rain

All the Poteau Pirates golf team wanted to do was make it to next week's Class 4A State Tournament at Oklahoma City's Lake Hefner North Golf Course. They accomplished their goal.
The Pirates were runners-up at the Class 4A Regional Tournament Monday at Wolf Ridge Golf Course.
Poteau had a team score of 320, 11 team shots behind regional champion Ada (309).

Cameron golfer makes state, places third at 2A Regional Tournament

ARROWHEAD RESORT — The Poteau Pirates will not be the only LeFlore County set of boys golfers playing next week at state. Cameron golfer Kody Whitehead will join them.
Whitehead, a sophomore, placed third at Monday's Class 2A Regional Tournament to make state.
The Class 2A State Tournament will be at Sugar Creek Canyon Golf Course near Hinton.
Whitehead shot a 74-83—157 to claim third place, and a trip to state.

Carl Albert baseball team splits with NOC-Enid Monday afternoon; twinbill moved to Monday due to Sunday's rain

ENID — Thursday afternoon at Ival Goodman Field, the Carl Albert State Vikings split a baseball doubleheader with the Northern Oklahoma College-Enid Jets.
Although Sunday afternoon's rain at David Allen Memorial Ballpark made the two teams wait until Monday afternoon to play the second doubleheader on the season series, the outcome was the same — a split.
The Vikings took the nightcap 6-4 after losing the opener 3-1.

Thunder use back-to-back nailbiters to take 2-0 series lead over Mavericks

OKLAHOMA CITY — After getting a last-second shot by Kevin Durant to win their opening game of the 2012 NBA Playoffs Saturday night, the Oklahoma City Thunder had to hold on once again Monday night against the defending NBA Champion Dallas Mavericks.
James Harden hit four free throws in the final 26 seconds, and the Thunder had to survive two 3-point attempts by Jason Terry in the final seconds to hold on for a 102-99 victory at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

Poteau individuals, relays win regional track titles; Pirates, Lady Pirates, Spiro, Heavener athletes qualify for state, but clerical error possibly costs Lady Wolf bid to state

STROUD — Several Poteau High School individuals and relays won regional titles at Saturday's Class 4A Regional Meet.
Deven Bond won the 3,200-meter run (12:56.95) as well as was part of the regional-champion 3,200-meter relay (10:18.63) along with Colleen Peterson, Jazmine Warren and Sheridan Hoyer.
Paitton Callery won the regional title in the pole vault (8-0), Jesse Woodson took first in the 100-meter dash (11.13 seconds), Dakota Clark claimed gold in the 300-meter hurdles (41.25) and Trevor Shankle was the regional champion in the shot put (46-11.75).
