Billy Barron, 85, of Muse died Friday, April 20, 2012, at home. Services were held Monday, April 23, at Muse Baptist Church with burial in Muse Cemetery under the direction of Talihina Funeral Home.

Keith Steelman

April 24, 2012

Keith Steelman, 51, of Monroe died Saturday, April 21, 2012,, in Monroe. Keith was born Oct. 19, 1960, in Poteau to Clyde Sr. and Marie Davis Steelman. He was a truck driver. Keith was preceded in death by his father. He loved coon hunting.

Calvin Lee Thomas

Calvin Lee Thomas, 87, of Springdale, Ark., died Sunday, April 22, 2012, at the Mercy Medical Center in Rogers. 
Calvin was born on Feb. 14, 1925, in Bokoshe, a son of William C. Thomas and Laura C. Wiles Thomas. He married Earlyne Pfeifer on Aug. 30, 1949, in Yuma, Ariz., who preceded him in death on Jan. 18, 2008, after 59 years of marriage. Calvin lived and worked most of his life in California, working in the citrus industry and retiring as a foreman. He was a very dedicated family man and a member of the Church of Christ.

Jerald Leroy Fox

Jerald Leroy Fox, 68, of Poteau, died Wednesday, April 18, 2012, in Poteau. Jerald was born in Poteau on Oct. 30, 1943, to Roy and Arley (Brand) Fox. Jerald was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Linda Rae Fox; and a son, Kevin Fox.

Woman crashes through apartment 3 injured

A woman crashes into an apartment at Poteau Valley Apartments today. Three children were injured in the collision. PDN will update the website when more information becomes available.

Benefit planned to help local family after accident

Thursday February 23, changed the life of one local family following a tragic motorcycle accident.
Samuel "Caleb" Davies , 27, of Poteau was flown by Life Flight to St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa after he lost control of his motorcycle that afternoon.

Poteau senior baseball player signs with Eastern Monday morning

Late last fall, Poteau High School senior baseball player Blake Roley had “Tommy John” surgery to repair an injured pitching arm. So often, such setbacks turn college coaches off athletes. Not so for Eastern Oklahoma State College Baseball Coach Craig Price.
Price signed Roley Monday morning at Poteau High School.
“That was a non-factor,” Price said. “Pretty much the way medical technology is today, his surgery was a non-factor. A lot of kids actually come back and throw it even harder. That never entered our minds in the recruiting process.”

Cameron golfer wins Class 2A Regional Qualifier

TISHOMINGO — Cameron Yellowjacket golfer Kody Whitehead won the Class 2A Regional Qualifier Monday afternoon at Tishomingo Golf Course.
He shot a 76 to shoot four-over par.
Whitehead will represent Cameron at the Class 2A Regional Tournament, which will be next Monday at Arrowhead Resort Golf Course. If he finishes among the top individuals, Whitehead will qualify for the Class 2A State Tournament the following Monday and Tuesday.

Cameron ’Jackets, Leflore boys, Heavener, Howe girls find out their regional-tournament fate; Class 2A, 3A, 4A baseball teams, Poteau girls get first taste of postseason this week

For four local teams of the diamond, they found out their fate for their respective regional tournaments Monday afternoon from the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association.
The Yellowjackets found out they will be a Class A Regional Tournament host with Gore, Okay and Wright City.
The Savages were sent to Red Oak, along with McCurtain and Stuart for a Class B Regional Tournament.
As for the ladies, the Heavener Lady Wolves were sent to McAlester for their Class 5A Regional Tournament, along with Bethel, Henryetta and Valliant.

Senior soccer trio winding down high school careers

April 24, 2012

This afternoon's homecoming soccer game at 4:30 p.m. at Costner Stadium against Hilldale will be the last time the senior Lady Pirates will hit the field at home.
Today's game also just happens to be the third game in five days at home to end the regular season for the Lady Pirates, who beat Porter Consolidated on Friday then had Senior Night Monday against Westville.
Senior defender/midfielder Jeanelle Cabellero wishes that the home contests were not confined to such a short time span.
