Ronald Butler Gates

Ronald Butler Gates, 67, of Poteau died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014, at home.
Ronald was born June 3, 1947, in Miami, Okla., the son of Daniel John and Billie Leah Engleman Gates. He graduated from Savanna High School in the class of 1965.
He worked for the state of Oklahoma as an appeals judge for the employment office before transferring to Poteau where he worked as the office manager until his retirement in 2007.
Ronald married Nan Stanton Corder on May 20, 1980, in McAlester.

Joyce E. Mitchell

Joyce E. Mitchell, 66, of Poteau died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014, in Fort Smith, Ark.
Joyce was born Nov. 16, 1947, in McCroy, Ark. to William Tobe Sr. and Georgia (Hoots) Holt. She was a postal clerk. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; sister-in-law, Vicki Holt; brothers, William Jr., Ed and James Holt. She was a longtime postal employee in Poteau. She was loved by many in the community for going above and beyond. She loved her children and grandchildren, traveling and the ocean. Joyce was a member of Hosanna Fellowship.

Wister pitcher blanks Poteau girls in season opener Monday afternoon

When your team doesn't score, it's going to be hard to win. That ill fate led to spoiling the 2014 fast-pitch softball season opener for the Poteau Lady Pirates on Monday afternoon.
Wister pitcher Hunter Gibson struck out 10 batters and retired 14 of the final 15 batters to end the game as the Lady Wildcats blanked the Lady Pirates 2-0 to get the 2014 season started for both teams.

Tickets still remain for the Poteau Pirates’ football season opener in the Hooten’s Kickoff Classic against Alma, Ark., at Fort Smith [Ark.] Northside High School at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 4.
Tickets for adults and students cost $7 per person, while pre-schoolers will be admitted for free.
For those wishing to purchase tickets, call Poteau coach Greg Werner at (918) 839-4572 or come by the high school or football fieldhouse.

2014 Poteau Bandit Football League and cheerleading registration is currently underway.
Forms may be picked up at Poteau City Hall. Cost is $35 per participant.

Allstate Insurance team captures Main Street Matters Tournament

The Allstate Insurance team comprised of Lyle Whitworth, Steven Sockey, Ricky McConnell and Daniel Caldwell won Friday’s 2014 Main Street Matters Golf Tournament at Choctaw Country Club, The team had a score of 18-under par.
Coming in second place a shot behind (-17) the championship team was the team representing C2 Supply, who were represented by Mike Fisher, Duane Roper, Gary Brown and Roy McClary.
Hannah Ward (women) and Mark Burnett (men) were the closest to the hole for their respective genders.

Jimmy Dale Corgill Sr.

Jimmy Dale Corgill Sr., 78 of Greenwood, Ark., died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014, in his home. He was retired from Union Pacific Railroad, manager of Corgill Construction, member of the Disabled American Veterans and BMAD of LeFlore County and Mount Zion Baptist Church.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 13, at Mount Zion Baptist Church with burial at Woodlawn Memorial Park under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood. Viewing will be from 1-8 p.m. Tuesday from 1 – 8 p.m. at the funeral home, where the family will visit with friends from 6-8 p.m.
