The Poteau Pirates football team went toe to toe with Class 4A's sixth-ranked Sallisaw Black Diamonds last week in the District 4A-4 opener at Costner Stadium, but eventually fell 31-21.
âWe played well, and we played hard,â said Greg Werner, Poteau's first-year coach. âWe didn't give up. It just came down to a few plays where we didn't make them and they did. That's just football, but we played very hard. There were a lot of good things (about the Sallisaw game).â
The District 3A-8 season got off on the wrong foot for the Spiro Bulldogs football team last week, but the âDogs just happened to play a team that is thought to be the favorite to win the district title â the Stigler Panthers. The Panthers proved that point to the Bulldogs in a 48-16 win.
The Pocola Indians are anxious to get back in the win column after facing two very good teams â the Quinton Savages (who beat them 30-14 in their home opener two weeks ago) and the second-ranked Vian Wolverines (who defeated them 68-0 in last week's District 2A-6 opener).
Rick Lang, Pocola's coach, said even in the preseason that Vian was going to be the team to beat in the district. After last week's game, he's even more sure of that.

Denton and Roberts hauled in 76.08 pounds of bass this season to earn $500. Andy Nance and Rodney Faulkenberry were second (68.77 pounds, $400), followed by Keith Griffith and Gary Steelman (68.66, $300), Robbie Brassfield and Keith Jones (65.29, $200) and Joey Chitwood and Tony Parker (63.84, $100).
