Poteau High School students, soccer teammates, family and friends are mourning the loss of sophomore Paige Underwood.
Underwood was killed in a single-car accident Thursday morning near Calhoun en route to coming to school.
In the Civil War, it was the North which defeated the South. However, in the 2012 LeFlore County All-Star Basketball Games, it was the South which rose.
The South teams swept the North in the latest all-star games which took place Tuesday night at Carl Albert State College's Mick Thompson Fieldhouse. The South girls defeated the North 33-26, which was then followed by a South boys victory over the North by a score of 73-69.
For most people, when to make a change can be a hard decision to make. Just take Poteau Pirates Baseball Coach Ronnie Sockey.
After being at Poteau for 13 seasons, 11 of which was also spent as assistant fast-pitch softball coach, Sockey has decided it's time for a change. He accepted the job as the new fast-pitch softball coach at Greenwood (Ark.) High School.
A benefit T-ball tournament will take place Saturday at Cameron. Entry fee is one new ball per game. Teams will play three games.

The eighth annual Mark "Mud Duck" Sullivan Junior Golf Camp will take place Tuesday through next Thursday at Choctaw Country Club. The camp will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday and Wednesday, while the final day of camp will be from 1 to 4 p.m. next Thursday. The camp is open to boys and girls of all ages. Entry fee is $20 per camper.
As I promised, I have more information regarding the baiting in the Wildlife Management Areas. I had a visit with James Lockhart in Shawnee last week on the way to the Class 2A State Tournament, and we had the opportunity to discuss the issue a little bit. He told me I needed to contact Jerry Ellis who is the vice chairman of tourism and wildlife in the senate.
I have not talked to Ellis yet, but I am planning on giving him a call â€” and you should do the same, if you have questions about the change in the baiting rule.
Citizens and law enforcement officials from all over the county as well as Arkansas and Oklahoma are expected to be in attendance tomorrow at the funeral services for long time Poteau Police Chief B.J. Smith.
The services are being held at the Donald W. Reynolds Center in order to accomadate as many people as possible under the direction of Grace Manor Funeral Home in Poteau.
Smith passed away Monday following a long battle with Cancer. He leaves behind his wife Ramona, and three boys, Billy Dalton, Joshua Boyd, and Jacob Ryan.
Beatrice Baugh, 81, of Talihina died Monday, May 14, 2012, at her home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 18, at Whitesboro Assembly of God with Carrol Fitzgerald officiating. Burial will be in Whitesboro Cemetery under the direction of Talihina Funeral Home.
