Opening day brings an upset in County Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament as Poteau, Talihina, Pocola, Panama girls reach winner's-bracket semifinals

For the most part, things went as planned on Day 1 of the 2012 LeFlore County Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament, which took place Monday at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex.
Three of the top four seeds, Poteau, Panama and Talihina, reached Tuesday night's winner's-bracket semifinals, but the other top seed, Wister, lost.
The Lady Pirates blanked Cameron 8-0, the Lady Razorbacks handled Heavener 8-1 and the Lady Golden Tigers beat Spiro 3-2 in a thriller. However, the Lady Wildcats fell 5-4 to the Pocola Lady Indians, who opened the day with a 10-0 win over the Bokoshe Lady Tigers.

County schools learning to cope with new OSSAA ruling

When this school year began, LeFlore County schools, coaches, athletic directors and administrators were going to be faced with a big challenge thanks to the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association. The OSSAA handed down two big rules. No. 1 — no games can take place on Wednesdays. No. 2 — no games can begin earlier than 4 p.m. and cannot start after 9 p.m.
For the Class A and B schools of the county, and state for that matter, it can pose a big problem.

WHITESBORO — The Whitesboro Bulldogs used late-inning offense to bounce back from Saturday night's loss to Wister in the title game of the Howe Wood Bat Classic.
Down 9-1 in the fifth inning, the Bulldogs came back to claim a 12-11 victory over the Leflore Savages Monday night.
Wister 12, McCurtain 10: In Wister, the Wildcats were able to outlast the Bulldogs to get the week off on the right foot.
The ’Cats (12-6) scored five runs in the second inning to take a 7-3 lead after two innings. A pair of runs in each the third and fourth innings put Wister ahead 11-4 entering the fifth inning.

Dowden four-man team wins CASC Coaches Golf Tournament

The four-player team of Hal Dowden, Doc Chitwood, Ray Luman and Mike Hahn won Monday's Carl Albert Coaches Golf Tournament at Wolf Ridge Golf Course. The foursome's score was 54.
The second-place team of Gabe Smith, Josh and Joe Tackett and Brandon Severe was just a shot behind at 55.
There was a stroke difference between second and third place as well as the quartet of Perry Reed, Alan McDaniel, Chad Knight and Chris Faust shot a 56.

Two duos win titles at Couples Scramble Saturday at Wolf Ridge

There were two winning duos in Saturday's Couples Scramble, which took place at Wolf Ridge Golf Course.
In the first flight, Kay Chitwood and Jerry Bowers (68) edged Terry and Stacey Harrison (70) to win the title.
It was an even closer battle in second flight as Josh and Courtney Wiles (78) got past Derrick and Hailey Benson (79) by a stroke.

Poteau youth wins Tulsa U.S. Kids Golf Tour event

One local young golfer recently brought home a tournament championship to LeFlore County.
Poteau's Connor Whitworth won a Tulsa U.S. Kids Golf Tour event. It marked the Poteau youth's first win on the tour.
He played the first four holes at 2-under par, and then had an 8 on a par-three hole to go to 2-over par. He finished with a 6-over par, 42 which tied Brecken Franklin who has never been defeated in the 7-year old boys Tulsa U.S. Kids Golf Tour.
Whitworth, who is age 7, made a birdie on his first playoff hole to win his sudden death playoff match.

Arkoma opens home football season against Maud Friday night

The good news is the Arkoma Mustangs football team will finally get a home game, after opening the season on the road for the first two weeks.
“We're excited to be playing at home,” said Mark Weatherton, Arkoma's coach. “We're looking forward to Friday night, especially after the way we played against Bokoshe.”
However, it's not the easiest of home openers — not at all, since it's against the Maud Tigers. Kickoff for the District C-4 game is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Mustang Field.
