STILLWATER â€” When you think about cowboys and longhorns, images of the wild west are bound to enter the mind. When thinking about the wild west, there's also gunfights and shootouts which also come to mind.
Saturday night at Boone Pickens Stadium, when the Oklahoma State Cowboys and the Texas Longhorns did battle in the Big 12 opener for both teams, it was exactly that â€” a shootout. In the end, Texas fired the last shot to defeat OSU by a score of 41-36.
The LeFlore County Commissioners signed a proclamation Monday morning recognizing October as 4-H Month.
Clarence â€śPeckâ€ť Underwood Jr., 83, of Talihina died Saturday. Sept. 29, 2012, at Oklahoma Veterans Center in Talihina.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, atÂ Talihina First Baptist Church. Burial will be in New Talihina Cemetery under the direction of Talihina Funeral Home.
Naomi Knier, 52, of Hugoton, Kan., died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, at Odyssey Hospice in Amarillo, Texas.
J.R. Harp, 82, longtime Stigler area resident, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, at Fort Smith.
Norma Walden, 90, of Wister died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012, at her home.Â Norma was born Nov. 16, 1921, in Leflore to Sherman and Nellie (Harris) Dehart. She was a clerk at Wister Food Market.
Norma was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Wister.Â Norma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leo; her grandson, Casey Branstetter; great-granddaughter, Skye Lee Amos; sister, Betty Brooks; and brothers-in-law, Roy Brooks and Wayne Powell.
STILWELL â€” In the pregame talk to his players, Greg Werner, Poteau's first-year coach, told his troops, â€śWe need to go out and set the tone and the pace of the game right from the start.â€ť Even though the Pirates scored quickly in the opening quarter, they lost their focus somewhere along the way, and the Pirates only led 13-7 over the upstart Stilwell Indians at the intermission.
The Poteau locker room was not the place to be if you were weak of heart. The Pirtates got the message the second time around, and went out and totally dominated the game as they won 40-7.
SPIRO â€” The Spiro Bulldogs football team got back into the District 3A-8 race as they won their first district game of 2012 and blanked the Idabel Warriors Friday night at McClain Stadium.
The Bulldogs snapped a two-game losing streak with the win.
TALIHINA â€” The Talihina Golden Tigers' offense scored early and often, and their defense shut down the Union Christian Academy Eagles to collect a 55-6 notch in the win column Friday night at Doc Robinson Stadium.
HUGO â€” The Pocola Indians football team bounced back from its District 2A-6 opening loss last week against Vian, but it didn't come easy.
After being down in the first quarter, the Indians rallied to force overtime, then Devon Martin's touchdown run in the extra period helped Pocola outlast the Hugo Buffaloes 39-38 in overtime Friday night.
