Nominations are currently being accepted for the 2012 Poteau High School Sports Hall of Fame.
Categories include: football, boys and girls basketball, baseball, fast-pitch and slow-pitch softball, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls track, boys and girls golf, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls all-around athlete, wrestling, coaching and support and service.
The deadline to submit nominations is March 30. For additional information or to submit a nomination, call (918) 839-0394.

Thursday's High School Baseball Roundup

MULDROW — A late rally came up short for the Poteau Pirates in their 2012 baseball opener Thursday afternoon.
The Pirates suffered a 2-1 loss to the Muldrow Bulldogs, but almost pulled the game out.
Down 2-0 after four innings and being no-hit for five innings, the Pirates finally got some hits and their lone run.
Thanks to a pair of singles by Jake McMillin and Wilson Klutts, the Pirates were able to scratch across a run in the sixth inning as McMillin scored when Blake Roley's ground ball was booted by the Bulldogs to allow Poteau to cut the deficit in half.

Poteau Spirit Center names February Stars of the Month

The Poteau Spirit Center named its five lucky Stars of the Month for February.
Ashlyn Barnes was named the Cheer Star of the Month for being the hardest worker in practice.
The Tumbler of the Month Award went to Catherine Dean for showing the most improvement this past month and giving it her all.
Rowan Cagle is the Tumblebear Star of the Month for raising the bar and always making people laugh.
The Gymnastic Class Star of the Month Award went to Haley Holly for always listening and practicing hard during class to learn new skills.

NOC-Enid teams sweep CASC basketball teams; Carl Albert teams in Region II Tournament play-in games on the road Monday night

The regular seasons ended on a down note for the Carl Albert State College basketball teams Thursday night at the Mabee Center in Enid.
Despite getting 19 points each from Adrion Webber and Jaymere Hadden, it wasn't enough for the Vikings as they lost 79-69 to Northern Oklahoma College-Enid Jets.
Shelby Trozzi's 19 points was not enough for the Lady Vikings to upset the ninth-ranked NOC-Enid Lady Jets, who prevailed 97-44.

Seminole State sweeps softball pair from CASC

Just 24 hours after the Carl Albert State College softball team swept Arkansas Baptist in a home doubleheader Wednesday afternoon, the Lady Vikings were the victims of a sweep Thursday afternoon.
The Seminole State College Lady Belles swept the Lady Vikings 7-1 and 11-5 in Thursday's doubleheader.
The Lady Vikings will close out the week with a road twinbill beginning at 2 p.m. this afternoon against Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa.

Jury returns with Hinson verdict

A jury of seven women and five men were sequestered Friday evening at approximately 5:30 p.m. after the conclusion of a murder trial involving defendant Aaron Ray Wesley Hinson who was accused of the murder of a three month old infant.
At 9:25 p.m. the jury rendered their verdict, finding Hinson guilty of first degree murder involving a child. The jury rendered a guilty plea with a recommended sentence of life.

Officials with the LeFlore County District Attorneys office expect closing arguments at the Aaron Hinson Case later today. Case will be released to jury for verdict. Make sure to grab a copy of the Poteau Daily News tomorrow for the complete story.

Heavener rallies behind young boy

March 2, 2012

Caden Place is the two-year-old of Jarrod and Rachel Place of Heavener. On January 30 he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He is now at St Francis receiving treatment. First Baptist Church in Heavener is hosting a Indian Taco dinner on March 4 to help with the expenses. On April 14 the Heavener Fire Department with the help of the Heavener and Poteau Masonic Lodges are putting on their fourth Annual Heavener Benefit Texas Hold'em Tournament. This year the proceeds from that event will be used to help the Place family.

Cinderella season ends for Poteau girls; Lady Pirates' playoff run ends with loss to Jay

MUSKOGEE — Midnight struck Cinderella's ball at about 2:45 p.m. Thursday.
The Cinderella playoff run for the Poteau Lady Pirates came to an screeching halt with a 73-48 loss to the Jay Lady Bulldogs Thursday afternoon in the Class 4A Area Tournament.
The Lady Pirates end their season at 8-20.
Trailing 13-10 after one period, the Lady Bulldogs scored the second quarter's first 13 points to take a 23-13 lead with just less than three minutes left before halftime.
