Panama stepping out of district play to face Foyil Panthers

The Panama Razorbacks suffered their biggest loss of the season Friday night as the Hartshorne Miners came to George Ollie Stadium and left town 47-7 victors to spoil the Hogs' homecoming. According to Panama coach Brandon Ellis, the Miners — at least on Friday night — showed they were the better team.
“They're a good ball club,” he said. “They're good at what they do. I think they were just better than us on that night. It might have had something to do with our depth, but I think our guys were in shape. I think they just outplayed us.”

Bandit teams go 3-1 against Greenwood Gray

GREENWOOD, Ark. — The Poteau Bandit League teams went 3-1 on Saturday against Greenwood Gray. The fifth-graders won its fifth game of the season, all by shutout, as they blanked Greenwood Gray 8-0. The fourth-grade team posted a 36-0 rout on Greenwood Gray, while the third-graders won also by shutout — posting a 27-0 victory.
The sixth-graders suffered a heartbreaking 8-6 defeat at the hands of Greenwood Gray.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, Oct. 9, at Old Cache Cemetery, Cartersville, under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home.

Violet Marie Whitmire Hobbs, 95, of Poteau died Friday, Sept. 26, 2014, at Heavener Nursing Home.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at Evans and Miller Funeral Home, 411 Dewey Ave., Poteau.

Billy Dean Earls, 77, of Poteau died Monday, Oct. 6, 2014, in Poteau. He was born March 28, 1937, in Heavener to Lester and Betty Jo (Berry) Earls. He was a barber. 
Billy is preceded in death by his parents; a son, Brian Earls; brother Lee Earls; and sister, Helen Earls.

Arkoma Lady Mustangs go 1-2 in Class A regional, but season ends

RATTAN — The Arkoma Lady Mustangs went 1-2 at last week’s Class A Regional Tournament, but their season came to an end with the two defeats to end their season at 9-10.
Arkoma beat Wright City 2-0 in 11 innings in a loser’s-bracket game, but opened the tournament with a 10-3 loss to Rattan and ended their season with a 4-3 nine-inning loss to Keota.

Cameron boys see fall baseball season end with regional losses to Roff, host Crowder

CROWDER — The fall baseball season came to an abrupt halt Friday afternoon for the Cameron Yellowjackets as they suffered two losses in the Class A Regional Tournament, losing 11-0 to Roff and 4-2 to host Crowder.
The ’Jackets ended the season at 13-13.

Matha Ann Odom

Matha Ann Odom, 80, of Poteau died Monday, Oct. 6, 2014, in Fort Smith, Ark.
Matha was born July 28, 1934, in Latham to John G. and Lois (Sulivant) Bowden. She was a retired secretary for the county superintendent of schools. Matha was a faithful member of Southside Baptist Church. She loved to play card games (Hand and Foot). Matha was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who loved spending time with her kids and grandkids. She was always there when you needed her.

Heavener girls force if-game, but lose regional finals to Sequoyah-Tahlequah; Lady Wolves, who lose to Spiro on Day 1, eliminate Lady Bulldogs in loser’s-bracket final on Saturday

SPIRO — Both LeFlore County softball teams who were in the Class 3A Regional Tournament had a shot at winning the regional title and making this week’s state tournament. However, in the end, neither made it.
The Heavener Lady Wolves lost in the winner-take-all regional finals game 8-3 to the Sequoyah-Tahlequah Lady Indians after beating them 7-2 in the first title game.
The Lady Wolves eliminated regional host Spiro 8-7 after the Lady Bulldogs beat the Lady Wolves 7-1 in Friday afternoon’s opening-round game.
