Lindall Lee Castor

Lindall Lee Castor, 77, of Poteau died Saturday, July 7, 2012, in Poteau. Lindall was born May 17, 1935 in Weatherby, Mo., to Lee Kenneth and Julia Bell (Lincoln) Castor. He was retired from the Kansas City, Kan., Fire Department where he proudly served for 30 years. Lindall was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He and his wife have been residents of Poteau for three years. Lindall had fought lung cancer for a year, and had made progress, but the cancer spread to his brain. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ruby Tamplin

Ruby Tamplin, 88, of Poteau died Saturday, July 7, 2012, in Poteau.
Ruby was born April 14, 1924, in Bluffton, Ark., to Ben and Nica (Evans) Markham. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Port Tamplin; stepson, Millard Tamplin; grandson, Edwin Boyce Liles; and granddaughter, Brandy Gail LeForce.

Winford “Spud” Chandler

Winford “Spud” Chandler, 73 of Poteau died Saturday, July 7, 2012, in Poteau.
Winford was born Sept. 27, 1938 in Poteau to W.S. and Ethel (Gassaway) Chandler. Winford was an outstanding athlete, even obtaining a full-ride baseball scholarship to Oklahoma State University. After graduating from OSU, Winford took his first job as a successful baseball and basketball coach for the Fort Leonard Wood-Waynesville School System. There he led the Tigers for the next eight years.

David Arnold Russell

David Arnold Russell, 85, of  Beckville, Texas, formerly of Poteau, died Friday, July 6, 2012, in Carthage, Texas. 
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 12, at Evans Chapel of Memories in Poteau. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery under the direction of Evans and Miller Funeral Home.

Dovie M. Collins, 81, of Spiro died Wednesday, July 4, 2012, at home.
Services were held Monday, July 9, at Shady Grove Baptist Church under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home.

Wister Wildcats runners-up at Preps Regional, state bound

WISTER — The bad news was the Wister Wildcats OK Kids prep baseball team lost a heartbreaking regional title game Friday night to the Stilwell Angels. The good news is the Wildcats are still state bound.
After the Angels scored twice in their the sixth inning to force extra innings, they scored once in the seventh inning to take a 3-2 victory in the 2012 OK Kids Regional Tournament at the Wister High School baseball field. The Angels (champions) and the Wildcats (runners-up) will both be at the 2012 OK Kids Preps State Tournament, which will begin today in Chandler.

Poteau Pirates defeat rain, Texoma Lookouts to make Midgets State Tournament

After the Poteau Pirates lost 4-3 to the Texoma Lookouts in the first game of last week's OK Kids Midgets Regional Tournament at the Poteau Area Recreational Area, they knew their backs were against the wall, needing to end the event 5-0 to advance to this week's Midgets State Tournament in Elk City. They did just that.

Poteau baseball teams make state, to meet each other today at Cushing; Buccaneers win Roland PeeWee Regional Tournament, while Rebels do likewise at Stilwell tournament

The good news is that LeFlore County will have two teams trying to vie for the 2012 OK Kids PeeWee State Tournament title. The bad news is they begin today's state tournament by meeting each other.
The Poteau Buccaneers and the Poteau Rebels each won their respective regional tournaments on Saturday to advance to state.
The Buccaneers defeated the Whitesboro Bulldogs 10-1 in Saturday's title game. The Bulldogs got to the title game by beating the tournament-host Roland Cardinals 14-6 in Friday night's loser's-bracket final.
