The Spiro Bulldogs are on a three-game losing streak since opening the 2011 season with a 44-6 win over Panama at McClain Stadium.
But since then, the Bulldogs (1-3 overall, 0-1 in District 3A-8) has scored only 29 points, with the six in last week's 23-6 district-opening loss to Idabel coming on Kaleb Guidry's interception return for a touchdown.
“That's been the problem,” Spiro Coach Chris Bunch said.
POCOLA — If there is a good thing about last week's 75-6 loss to the Vian Wolverines in the District 2A-6 opener for the Pocola Indians, it is that there's the Wilburton Diggers waiting in the wings.
Last year, the Diggers came to John Carter Field and left with a 21-14 victory. The Indians (3-1, 0-1 in district play), who saw their six-game winning streak dating back to last season snapped by last week's loss, do not want the same thing to happen this year when the two teams meet at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Wilburton.
Last week, the Poteau Pirates lost their District 4A-4 opener to the Hilldale Hornets, which was their second loss in a row after opening the season 2-0.
“It was disappointing since we were going in feeling very confident,” Poteau High School senior place-kicker Blake Williams said. “We were pretty sure we had it set up in a way that was going to be a pretty sure way for us to win.”
HEAVENER — In a regional-tournament tune-up game for both teams, the Heavener Lady Wolves were able to outlast the Wister Lady Wildcats 9-8 in a nine-inning, international-tiebreaker contest Tuesday afternoon.
Editor's Note — Panama treated its games in Tuesday's three-way at Red Oak with Sequoyah-Tahlequah as scrimmages.
BOKOSHE — It took four tries, but the Bokoshe Tigers football team got its first win of 2011 as well as the first win for new Bokoshe Coach Tyler Massey last Friday night in a thrilling 48-42 win over Eagle Point Christian Academy.
“Everybody was excited,” Massey said. “It was a good win for these kids. We just have to keep trying to improve.”
Now, the Tigers (1-3, 0-2 in District C-4) will return to district play with a 7:30 p.m. Friday road game at Claremore Christian.
Whether it was the Monday afternoon loss to Red Oak in the cancer game or that contest's postgame pep talk by Poteau Coach Misty Collins, either or both seemed to put some vigor into the Lady Pirates in their Tuesday afternoon home game against the Spiro Lady Bulldogs.
After losing their last two games to Panama and Red Oak, the Lady Pirates responded by run ruling the Lady Bulldogs 10-2 in five innings.
WESTVILLE — It was a happy trip up and down U.S. 59 on Saturday as the Poteau Bandit League football teams went 4-0 against the homestanding Westville squads.
The sixth-grade Poteau team handled Westville 24-8, which followed the fifth-grade team's 28-0 shutout of Westville, a thrilling come-from-behind 24-22 victory for the fourth-graders and a 25-7 win for the third-graders.
In the sixth-grade contest, Kale Barcheers had two rushing touchdowns, while Jamison Shackleford had another rushing TD. Seth Ryan kicked three two-point conversions for Poteau.
