SPIRO â€” The Spiro Lady Bulldogs began their postseason parade in style Friday afternoon by sweeping the Stigler Lady Panthers 5-0 and 12-1 to win the Class 3A District Tournament.
The Lady Bulldogs (18-7) will find out on Monday who, when and where they will play in next week's Class 3A Regional Tournament.
HEAVENER â€” A year ago, the Stigler Lady Panthers stunned the Heavener Lady Wolves on their home field to win the Class 3A District Tournament. The Lady Wolves made sure that did not happen this year.
The Lady Wolves swept the Eufaula Lady Ironheads by scores of 8-0 and 9-0 Thursday to win the Class 3A District Tournament.
Heavener (26-8) will find out Monday afternoon where, who and when they will play in the Class 3A Regional Tournament.
RED OAK â€” The season came to an end for the Leflore Lady Savages as they suffered a pair of 12-0 losses to the Red Oak Lady Eagles Friday afternoon.
The Lady Savages (3-10) only had one base-runner all tournament long as Taylor Lloyd got to first base on a walk.
Candis Crawford (1-9) suffered the Game 1 loss, while Lindsey Mote (2-1) suffered her first loss of the season in Game 2.
BATTIEST â€” The Whitesboro Lady Bulldogs saw their season end with a pair of losses in the Class B District Tournament Friday afternoon.
The Lady Bulldogs suffered shutouts against host Battiest and Eagletown. They ended their season at 1-14.
TULSA â€” The Poteau High School cross country teams both finished 13th at Thursday afternoon's Tulsa Washington Invitational at O'Brian Park.
Two Lady Pirates medaled as Deven Bond was 14th (13:56) and Sheridan Hoyer was 17th (14:07). Samantha Galetka ran a 15:55, followed by Shandee Staton (16:48) and Katie Piquet (16:55).
James William Ward, 86, of Leflore died
Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011, in Fort Smith,
Ark. Ward was born Jan. 3, 1925, in
Vantress to Hollie James William and Julia
Ann (French) Ward. He was a U.S. Army
veteran, serving in Third Battalion Co. K
115th Inf. Regiment, Fifth Army, 29th
Infantry Division. He was a WWII veteran
involved in the D-Day landings in Normandy. His military
honors include a Purple Heart, Presidential Unit Citation,
Combat Infantry Badge, Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct
Ribbon, Theater Ribbon and three Bronze Service Stars.
Twenty-two year-old Whitney Spangler

short period of time led her to Dr. Tamatha
Holt, OD in Poteau who discovered that
something was putting pressure on the
optic nerve. A CT Scan confirmed the
tumor, and Whitney ultimately ended up at
UT Southwestern in Dallas for treatment.
Thursday morning northbound traffic on South Broadway in Poteau was temporarilyblocked as OG&E crews attempted to remove an electric pole from the roadway.
A dumptruck working at the Reynolds Center struck the pole toppling it to

On the night the accident occurred,
Brandon E. Brown, 15, of Talihina, was
driving a 2000 Mercury car on a county
dirt road when he lost control of the vehicle.
Brown, along with Adams, and two
other minor children were in the vehicle
when the accident occurred.
WISTER â€” The Wister Lady Wildcats softball team punched its ticket to next week's Class 2A Regional Tournament.
The Lady Wildcats swept the Talihina Lady Golden Tigers by scores of 13-9 and 3-0 in the Class 2A District Tournament on Wednesday.
The Lady â€™Cats (20-12) will find out early next week who, where and when they will play in the regional tournament.
The Lady Golden Tigers (13-12) saw their season come to an end.
