STILWELL â€” The Heavener High School soccer teams split their regular-season finales here Friday night with the Stilwell Indians and Lady Indians.
The Wolves capped off a perfect regular season with a 1-0 win over the Indians. The Wolves (10-0 overall, 5-0 in District 4A-6) will be idle until a home playoff game Tuesday at Harvey Stadium, which is tentatively set for 5 p.m.
The Lady Wolves suffered a 6-0 loss to the Lady Indians in a game which was a lot closer than the score indicated. They finished the season at 3-5 overall, 2-4 in district play.
There were several local winning individuals and relay teams at last week's Poteau Invitational at Costner Stadium.
On the girls' side, Poteau's Deven Bond won the 800-meter run (2:36.13), and she was a part of the winning 3,200-meter relay (10:32) with Colleen Peterson, Sheridan Hoyer and Jazmine Warren. Teammate Skyler Webster won the 100-meter hurdles (18.34 seconds), while Latifah Harris won the 400-meter dash (1:00.16).
Spiro's Kanisha Hutchinson won the long jump (15-2.5).
At approximately 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, the Poteau Fire and Police Departments along with LeFlore County EMS were dispatched to the Poteau Valley Apartments on Windham Street in Poteau in response to a vehicle that had reportedly been driven through an apartment.
Rescue workers on the scene said that the white sedan was pulling into a parking space when the driver accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake, launching the car over the sidewalk and down an embankment into the living room of an apartment.
Raymond Jesse Akins, 83, of Keota died Sunday, April 22, 2012. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, at Cowlington Baptist Church. Burial will be in Spiro City Cemetery under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home.
Maxine Hembree, 84, of Heavener died Monday, April 23, 2012. Maxine was born April 15, 1928, in Heavener to Edward and Elizabeth Hall. She was a graduate of DeQueen High School and attended Henderson State College. Maxine was a member of First United Methodist Church in Heavener, worked at State National Bank and was a Cub Scout den mother. She was a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Hembree.
George â€śG.H.â€ť Morton, 87, of Panama died Sunday, April 22, 2012. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 25, at Panama First Baptist Church. Burial will be in old Bokoshe Cemetery under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home, Spiro.
Billy Barron, 85, of Muse died Friday, April 20, 2012, at home. Services were held Monday, April 23, at Muse Baptist ChurchÂ with burial in Muse Cemetery under the direction of Talihina Funeral Home.
Keith Steelman, 51, of Monroe died Saturday, April 21, 2012,, in Monroe.Â Keith was born Oct. 19, 1960, in Poteau to Clyde Sr. and Marie Davis Steelman.Â He was a truck driver. Keith was preceded in death by his father.Â He loved coon hunting.
Calvin Lee Thomas, 87, of Springdale, Ark., died Sunday, April 22, 2012, at the Mercy Medical Center in Rogers.Â
Calvin was born on Feb. 14, 1925, in Bokoshe, a son of William C. Thomas and Laura C. Wiles Thomas.Â He married Earlyne Pfeifer on Aug. 30, 1949, in Yuma, Ariz., who preceded him in death on Jan. 18, 2008, after 59 years of marriage.Â Calvin lived and worked most of his life in California, working in the citrus industry and retiring as a foreman.Â He was a very dedicated family man and a member of the Church of Christ.
