Trixie M. Orendorff

March 26, 2012

Trixie M. Orendorff, 99, of Poteau died Thursday, March 22, 2012, in Fort Smith, Ark. Trixie was born May 23, 1912, in Hanson to Grover and Eva (Boothe) Lessley. She was a sales clerk. She and O.M Orendorff were married Feb. 27, 1973. He preceded her in death on Dec. 15, 1982. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Gailya Lea Miller, and granddaughter, Karen.

Unemployment released

According to a report by the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission, LeFlore County has been ranked 70 out of Oklahoma's 77 counties in terms of employment for January 2012. Only six other counties reported a worse unemployment rate that LeFlore County with Latimer County holding the highest rate across the state.
Out of an estimated labor force of 19,017 workers, 17,184 were employed, leaving 1,833 LeFlore County citizens without jobs, raising the unemployement rate from 8.7 percent in December to the current 9.6 percent..

Fifth-inning Dickson rally dooms Poteau in Wood Bat Festival; Two games this afternoon at each Town Creek Park, Cameron

Finally, the 2012 Poteau Wood Bat Festival got underway Friday afternoon, but the host Pirates were not the ones celebrating a win.
Thanks to a six-run fifth inning, the visiting Dickson Comets rallied, and held off a potential seventh-inning rally by Poteau, to down the Pirates 6-5 at Town Creek Park.
The Pirates (4-3) will get another chance this afternoon to get a win in their own festival as they will take on the Sallisaw-Central Tigers at 2 p.m. this afternoon at Town Creek Park, which will come on the heels of the Tigers' game with Hartshorne at noon this afternoon.

Upward Sports Unlimited seems to be a big hit in Poteau

Friday ended the weeklong Upward Basketball Camp, which took place at the Pansy Kidd Middle School Gym thanks to the Church of the Nazarene.
The event was basically a “Bible Basketball Camp.” Not only was sportsmanship and basketball fundamentals taught to the nearly 60 campers, but there was also devotion time present daily as well.

Nominations are currently being accepted for the 2012 Poteau High School Sports Hall of Fame.
Categories include: football, boys and girls basketball, baseball, fast-pitch and slow-pitch softball, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls track, boys and girls golf, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls all-around athlete, wrestling, coaching and support and service.
The deadline to submit nominations is Friday.

Kermit Haskell Christian

Kermit Haskell Christian, 66, of Fort Smith, Ark., formerly of  Leflore, died Thursday, March 22, 2012, in Fort Smith. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, March 26, at Leflore Cemetery Pavilion, Leflore, with Rev. Jim Cook officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Evans and Miller Funeral Home, Poteau.

Stella Marie Gorham

Stella Marie Gorham, 94, of Bakersfield, Calif., formerly of Spiro, died March 15, 2012, in Bakersfield. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 24, at Cowlington Cemetery, Cowlington, with Minister Gary James officiating. Grace Manor Funeral Home, Spiro, is handling arrangements.

Fred Allan Johnson

Fred Allan Johnson, 74, of Poteau died Thursday, March 22, 2012, in Fort Smith, Ark.
Fred was born Dec. 14, 1937, in Kaiser, Ark., to Linzy and Nolus (Ferguson) Johnson. He worked as a prison guard.
Survivors include his sons, David Johnson  and Jody Johnson of Texarkana, Texas.; daughter, Sherri Roark of Russellville, Ark.; two brothers, Don Johnson of Poteau and Retus Johnson of Apple Valley, Calif.; sister, Patricia Salway of Panama; numerous nieces and nephews, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild; other relatives and loved ones; many beloved friends. No services are scheduled.

Carolyn Sue Schaefer, 51, of Poteau died March 17, 2012, in Spiro. She was born Jan. 28, 1961, in Cameron to Thomas Gene Wilson and Esta (Perkins). She was a cook.
She was preceded in death by her father, one brother and one sister.
